  1. STONE TO FLESH: A NEW HEART Ezekiel 36:16-27

  2. “Great are you, O Lord, and exceedingly worthy of praise; your power is immense, and your wisdom beyond reckoning. And so we men, who are a due part of your creation, long to praise you – we also carry our mortality about with us, carry the evidence of our sin and with it the proof that you thwart the proud. You arouse us so that praising you may bring us joy, because you have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you…” -ST Augustine of Hippo

  3. Our heart beats for just about everything but God. Sex, Money, Comfort, Work, Pleasure, Prominence, and the list goes on and on. We are living for everything but the glory of Christ and this is because we have a TERMINAL Heart condition! Diagnosis? DEATH. We have a dead heart! Certainly it feels and seems to come alive to all the things we mentioned above. We feel deeply about our idols, but when it comes to the things of Christ, it’s as lifeless, hard, cold, and unresponsive as a stone.

  4. This is exemplified best in the state of Israel (vs 16-21) Wicked deeds (vs 16-17) God does not wink at nor capitulate to our sin, and if we saw it like He does we’d hate it like he does. It is cosmic treason as opposed to circumstantial indifference. It’s a fist in His face as opposed to a light hearted “whoops and a grin.” It’s what caused Him to put to death His only son because God CANNOT and WILL NOT abide our wickedness. Idolatry (vs 18-20) These are supposed to be the chosen people of God who are identified by the holy almighty provision of their sovereign God. Profaned the Holy name of God by placing trust in things that are not God himself

  5. Idolatry: “worship of idols” “extreme admiration, love, or reverence for something or someone.” MISPLACED TRUST Jeremiah 2:12-13: “Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the Lord, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.

  6. This is the condition of the dead heart. The heart seemingly alive to all of the cravings of the flesh and completely lifeless and unresponsive to the things of the Spirit. It is a cold, hard stone. BUT GOD HAD CONCERN FOR HIS HOLY NAME! (VS 21) Church we have HOPE because God had concern for His Holy Name This is why the Gospel MUST START WITH GOD. WE ARE THE BLESSED BENEFICIARIES OF GOD’S PURSUIT OF HIS OWN GLORY. SALVATION WAS NOT PRIMARILY FOR MAN, IT WAS PRIMARILY FOR THE GLORY OF GOD’S FAME! EPHESIANS 2:4-7 Because God has concern for His holy name HE will see to it that the story of redemption is complete

  7. How does He do this? HEART TRANSPLANT, the greatest medical procedure ever done in the history of humanity (vs 26-27) God says enough!!! I will do for you what you cannot and would not do for yourself!!! I will rip out your stone cold dead rock of a heart and put in you one that is flesh, in other words one that is alive and beating!!! And Not only that, He also CAUSES THEM TO OBEY!!! How so? With this new heart! With this new heart comes new desires, new dispositions, a new nature that results in loving GOD

  8. God does not give out faulty hearts, but rather hearts that long for Him, hearts that desire Him, hearts that want to obey Him. This was always the plan. Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” If the plan was always our allegiance and obedience to Christ, then it was always God who would see it through! This is a work initiated, preserved, and brought to completion by God, and for His glory so that NO ONE MAY BOAST! Jesus Himself said in John 6:63: “It is the Spirit who gives life, THE FLESH IS NO HELP AT ALL.”

  9. Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." To the contrary, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. - Romans 12:9-21

  10. All of these things are a result of a new heart, NOT THE ESSENCE OF THE NEW HEART. 1 Peter 4:6: “For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.” We as a people of God have been saved and given new hearts not to simply obey God but to treasure, love, worship, and exalt God forever the way He does with Himself!!!

  11. The new heart, at it’s core, because of the promise of God, through the salvation of Christ, and the work of the Spirit; loves, cherishes, worships, and treasures Christ in all things and above all things. Leading it to trust supremely in it’s “Sovereign Surgeon” who ripped out the heart of stone and replaced it with the heart of flesh that lives to the glory of God. What a miraculous transplant indeed.
