My Questions • When did he ever get the time to do any REAL work? • When did he ever get to see his family?
REAL work??? Highlights • SRS light source • HELIOS • FELs (originated project work in the UK in 1978) • DIAMOND • ASTeC and Cockcroft (4GLS, EMMA, ERLP • ILC • Neutrino factory Family ???
To Finish • Mike is a recognised, renowned world expert in the field of electron beam physics and all devices which use them. • He has a rare combination of technical expertise, theoretical understanding and management abilities • He has spearheaded the renaissance of accelerator science and technology in the UK by playing a leading role in the initial bidding for the Cockcroft institute, and as director of ASTeC
He personally originated Free Electron Laser project work in the UK (in 1978) • He has been closely associated with a large number of major international FEL projects • He continues to promote FEL schemes, most recently in the 4GLS project. • He has had a major advisory role to the EU and to ESRFI on FEL topics, and led the European consortium for a successful EU-FP6 bid (EUROFEL).
