  7. 1. Ancient Rome was essentially a democracy before Caesar, but Caesar instituted a dictatorship, thus many found him dangerous.

  8. 2. During the mid-1st century BCE, three men, Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus, formed a secret pact—the First Triumvirate—to control the Republic. After Caesar's conquest of Gaul (France), a stand-off between Caesar and the Senate led to civil war, with Pompey leading the Senate's forces. Caesar emerged victorious, and was made dictator for life. This is where the film starts. The Roman people had loved Pompey, but now they have switched their allegiance to Caesar.

  9. 3. In Caesar’s Time: The rulers had to work with the senate, which was initially an advisory council of the ranking nobility, or patricians (rich people), but grew in size and power over time. The government posts were originally restricted to patricians, but were later opened to common people, or plebeians. Tribunes, like Flavius and Murellus in the very beginning of the play, were elected by plebeians to help people if the patricians were being unfair.
