  3. ManchesterUnitedFootballClubisanEnglishPremierLeaguefootballclubwhichplaysatOldTraffordinGreaterManchester. TheclubwasformedasNewtonHeathin 1878, joinedtheFootballLeaguein 1892 andhasplayedinthetopdivisionofEnglishfootballsince 1938 withtheexceptionofthe 1974–75 season. AverageattendancesattheclubhavebeenhigherthananyotherteaminEnglishfootballforallbutsixseasonssince 1964–65. 

  4. ManchesterUnitedarethereigningEnglishchampions, havingwonthe 2008–09 PremierLeague. TheclubisoneofthemostsuccessfulinthehistoryofEnglishfootballandhaswon 22 majorhonourssinceAlexFergusonbecamemanagerinNovember 1986. In 1968, theybecamethefirstEnglishclubtowintheEuropeanCup, beatingBenfica 4–1. Theywon a secondEuropeanCupaspartof a Treblein 1999, and a thirdin 2008, beforefinishing runner-up in 2009. TheclubholdsthejointrecordforthemostEnglishleaguetitleswith 18 andalsoholdstherecordforthemost FA Cupwinswith 11.

Sincethelate 1990s, theclubhasbeenoneoftherichestintheworldwiththehighestrevenueofanyfootballclub, andiscurrentlyrankedastherichestandmostvaluableclubinanysportworldwide, withanestimatedvalueofaround L 1.136 billionasofApril 2009. ManchesterUnitedwas a foundingmemberofthenowdefunct G-14 groupofEurope'sleadingfootballclubs, anditsreplacement, theEuropeanClubAssociation.  • AlexFergusonhasbeenmanageroftheclubsince 6 November 1986, joiningfromAberdeenafterthedepartureofRonAtkinson.   7. ManchesterCityfootballclubwasoriginallyfoundedin 1880. Backthen, itwasknownasSaintMarks (WestGorton), whichthenchangedtobeknownasArdwick A.F.C. intheyear 1887. Theclubfinallysettledonitscurrentname, ManchesterCityFootballClub, intheyear 1894.

  8. ManCityhasdefinitelyhaditsupsanddownthroughtheyears. Perhapsitsmostsuccessfulperiodinhistorywasbetweentheendofthe 1960s andthebeginningofthe 1970s. ManchesterCitywonanamazingnumberoftrophiesbetweenthoseyears, includingthe FA Cupin 1969, theLeagueCuptwicein 1970 and 1976, theCharityShieldin 1968 and 1972, andtheEuropeanCupWinner'sCupin 1970. Asonecanseefromthisimpressivelist, theyearsbetweenthe late-1960s and early-1970s wereincrediblysuccessfulonesforthebluehalfofManchester. • Unfortunately, however, afterthisamazingperiodoftimewhentheManCityflourished, theyhadquite a slumpandstruggledquite a lotas a team. Citymadeittothe 1981 FA CupFinalbutultimatelyendeduplosing. Itwasquiteanupsettinglossfortheteamanditsmanylegionsoffans. ManchesterCitywasalsorelegatedfromtopflightduringthe 80s. Theymanagedtoagainstartrisingineminence, thensufferedanotherslowdecline. Theglorydaysseemedtobewellbehindthematthispointintheirhistory.

  9. ManchesterCity FC waspartoftheoriginalPremierLeaguelineupin 1992, butsadlytheyendedupbeingrelegatedtoDivisionOnein 1996. ThustheupsanddownsinthefortunesoftheManchesterCityFootballclubcontinuedon. Cityseemedtogetitsgamegoingprettywellfor a periodoftimethereafter, onlytoberelegatedonceagainin 2001. Happily, however, theywontheDivisionOnechampionshipfor 2001-2002, whichwas a greateventforfansoftheclubandwasmuchtalkedaboutandremarkeduponatthetime. • ThroughoutitshistoryManCityhadbasicallyalwaysplayedat a stadiumcalledMaineToad. In 2003, though, Citymovedto a newstadiumwhichisknownastheCityofManchesterStadium. Thiswasquite a bigeventinManchesterandreceivedmuchattentionfromfansandthepress. Aftermovingintotheirnewhome, andsincethattime, Cityhasexperiencedmuchdramawithitsleadershipandperformances. Theclubremains, however, oneofthemostpopularinEnglandtothisdayandsincebeingtakenoverbyAbuDhabibasedbillionairestheirfanscanseenothingbutgreatthingsforManCity.
