Interactions. Within an Ecosystem 22-3. Niche. Every organism has a niche. A niche is an organisms role in the ecosystem. My role in the classroom is to teach understanding of topics. My role on the softball field is to coach the fundamentals of the game.

Niche • Every organism has a niche. • A niche is an organisms role in the ecosystem. • My role in the classroom is to teach understanding of topics. • My role on the softball field is to coach the fundamentals of the game. • My role at home is to feed the dogs, and do chores around the house. • What is your niche: • At home? • At school? • At practice? • At church?

  4. Competition • the struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources. • Resources include: food, water, and shelter

  8. Predation • An interaction in which one organism hunts and kills another for food. • Predator--organism that does the killing • Prey--the organism that is caught Examples: zebra The lion kills …………….. The bird kills ………….. fish The human kills the….... deer squirrel The dog kills the….…...

  9. Predator/Prey Relationship The populations of wolves and moose on Isle Royale are related. The predator wolf population depends on the size of the prey moose population, and vice versa. Predicting How might a disease in the wolf population one year affect the moose population the next year?

  10. Symbiosis • is a close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species. Mutualism Commensalism   Parasitism  

  11. Mutualism • A relationship in which both species benefit.

  12. Commensalism • A relationship in which one species benefits and the other species is neither helped nor harmed

  13. Parasitism Parasite: organism that benefits Host: organism that is being harmed. • involves one organism living on or inside another organism and harming it
