When every drop counts • Isothermal humidifier technologies and water • Isothermal humidifier operation and water management • Water efficiency comparison
Isothermal humidification • What do they have in common? • Isothermal = humidification at a constant air temperature • Steam is produced by boiling water • The steam produced is demineralized; minerals are not carried over • The reservoir must be drained to manage the precipitated mineral and ion concentration
Isothermal Humidification and Water • Water is known as the universal solvent. Minerals are dissolved from the geological location containing the water source. • The amount of dissolved solids in water is defined by the TDS concentration, Total Dissolved Solids • The most common water problem is hardness, expressed in the concentration of calcium carbonate, CaCO3 • High chlorides (Cl-) and unbalanced pH levels are also important to consider
Isothermal Humidification and Water • Why are drains necessary? • Calcium Carbonate • The solubility of calcium carbonate decreases as the water temperature increases • As the water is heated, calcium carbonate precipitates out and coats the surfaces of wetted components • Chlorides and pH imbalance • Low pH or high chlorides in the supply water can deteriorate metal components when allowed to over-concentrate
Isothermal Humidification and Water 1. How do they work? 2. How is water managed? 3. How do they compare? Nortec Electrode Resistive element Gas-fired and steam exchange
How do resistive element humidifiers work? Fill valve Steam outlet Water level Control Skimmer port Heating element Drain valve Dri-SteemVapormist • How do they work? • An electrical current flows through a resistive element to convert electricity into heat. • The resistive element is submersed and heat is transferred to the water. • The advantage of this process is no dependence between steam production and water conditions. • All water types can be used and steam is generated quickly.
How do resistive element humidifiers manage water? Fill valve Steam outlet Water level Control Skimmer port Heating element Drain valve Dri-SteemVapormist • How is water managed? • There are two drain modes: Skim cycles and complete tank drains (full tank blowdown). • Skim cycle: the water level is raised to the skimmer port and surface water is drained from the system. This occurs during filling and the skim duration is fixed. • Full tank blowdown: the entire contents of the tanks are drained. The intervals are proportional to the steam output.
How do resistive element humidifiers manage water? How much water is drained? • Skim cycle • The skim cycle duration is fixed. From experimental testing, the manufacturer drain rate setting is 36% of the steam output rate. • Full tank blowdown (FTBD) • The full tank blowdown intervals are fixed. The intervals are based on a defined steam output. From experimental testing, the steam weigh to blowdown is 25,000 lbs.
How do heat exchanger humidifiers work? Fill Valve Fill Box Tank Drain Pump Heat Exchanger Nortec GSTC/SETC • How do they work? • There are two energy sources: gas combustion or pressurized steam. • The heat exchanger is submersed and heat is transferred directly to the water. • The same advantage as resistive element: the process has no dependence between steam production and water conditions. • Gas-fired and steam exchange humidifiers are ideal for handling large humidification loads with minimal operating costs.
How do heat exchanger humidifiers manage water? Fill Valve Fill Box Tank Heat Exchanger Drain Pump Nortec GSTC/SETC • How is water managed? • There are two drain modes: drain cycles (blowdown) and complete tank drains (full tank blowdown). • Blowdown: a drain pump removes a fixed volume of water. The blowdown intervals are proportional to the steam output. • Full tank blowdown: the entire contents of the tanks are drained. The intervals are also proportional to the steam output.
How do heat exchanger humidifiers manage water? How much water is drained? • Blowdown • The blowdown percentage is fixed. The Nortec drain rate setting for GSTC and SETC humidifiers is 25% of the steam output rate. • Full tank blowdown (FTBD) • The full tank blowdown intervals is fixed. The intervals are based on a defined weighed steam output. For the GSTC/STC, the FTBD is set to drain the tank 72 hours of weighed steam output.
How do electrode humidifiers work? Steam outlet Electrodes Potable water Drain Nortec NHTC Nortec Cylinder • How do they work? • Dissolved minerals (ions) are used to conduct electricity between submerged electrodes. • Pure water is an insulator; therefore heat is generated by the resistance (conductivity) of the water. • The water becomes the heating element.
How do electrode humidifiers work? Steam outlet • It takes 340W to generate 1 lbs/hr of steam. • For a fixed voltage, the steam output of an electrode humidifier is proportional to the amp draw: Electrodes • Parameters to control steam output: • Water conductivity • Higher ion concentration equals a higher amp draw • Electrode coverage • More electrode coverage equals a higher amp draw Potable water Drain
How do electrode humidifiers work? • Conductivity • The supply water conductivity varies with the water source • The higher the total dissolved solids in the supply water, the higher its conductivity • Nortec electrode humidifiers can operate on a water conductivity of 150 μS/cm to 1250 μS/cm. • The average conductivity of water in North America is 300 μS/cm.
How do electrode humidifiers work? Conductivity and electrode coverage control steam output. How is conductivity and electrode coverage controlled? • Conductivity • The supply water conductivity varies with the water source • As water is boiled, dissolved minerals remain in the cylinder increasing the conductivity • Adding and/or removing water from the system decreases the conductivity • Electrode Coverage • Increasing the electrode coverage increases the amp draw Same Amp Draw Low conductivity High electrode coverage High conductivity Low electrode coverage
How do electrode humidifiers manage water? Nortec’s patented auto-adaptive control TOptimal TOptimal TOptimal Fill Off Amps Mean Amp Draw (Output) Fill On Amps TMeasured TMeasured TMeasured Drain TDrain • Boil down cycle: starts at a high amp trigger (fill off amps) and ends at a low amp trigger (fill off amps) • The humidifier output is the mean amp draw of the boil down cycle • Toptimal is the optimal time for one boil down cycle • TMeasured is the measured time for one boil down cycle • TDrain is a calculated drain time
How do electrode humidifiers manage water? Nortec’s patented auto-adaptive control TOptimal TOptimal TOptimal Fill Off Amps Mean Amp Draw (Output) Fill On Amps TMeasured TMeasured TMeasured Drain TDrain Toptimalis a constant derived from 35 years of experimental testing TMeasured > Toptimal the water conductivity is low, the cylinder is filled and boil down cycle starts TMeasured < Toptimal the water conductivity is high, the cylinder is drained and filled to start a boil down cycle *Drain times are calculated by the rate of change of the boil down cycle*
How do electrode humidifiers manage water? Nortec’s patented auto-adaptive control TOptimal TOptimal TOptimal Fill Off Amps Mean Amp Draw (Output) Fill On Amps TMeasured TMeasured TMeasured Drain TDrain • Auto-adaptive control advantages • Drains are optimized for water conditions • No end-user fine tuning
How do electrode humidifiers manage water? How much water is drained? The drain rate is proportional to the water conductivity: Drain rates are optimized by comparison with a constant (Toptimal); there the drain percentage is proportional to the conductivity of the water. Full tank blowdown (FTBD) None There are no requirements for a full tank blow down. A high concentration/conductivity is required for operation.
Isothermal Humidification and Water How do their water efficiencies compare?
Isothermal Humidification and Water Example: Humidifier output: 100 lbs/hr Operating period: 2,000 hours Conductivity: 300 μS/cm (North American average) Resistive element tank volume: 20 US Gal Heat exchanger tank volume: 20 US gal Total steam produced during the operating period: Each pound of steam requires one pound of water, assuming a density of 0.12 US Gal/lb: Regardless of the technology, 24,000 US Gal of makeup water is consumed.
Isothermal Humidification and Water Resistive element water consumption Blowdown volume: Full tank blowdown volume: Water consumption for 200,000 lbs of steam
Isothermal Humidification and Water Gas-fired/steam exchange water consumption Blowdown volume: Full tank blowdown volume: Water consumption for 200,000 lbs of steam
Isothermal Humidification and Water Nortec electrode steam water consumption: Blowdown percentage is proportional to water conductivity. Using the average North American water conductivity, 300 μS/cm, the blowdown is: Water consumption for 200,000 lbs of steam
Isothermal Humidification and Water Nortec electrode steam water consumption: Then, the blowdown volume is: There are no full tank blowdowns. Water consumption for 200,000 lbs of steam
Conclusion • All humidifier technologies must drain water to manage the build up of precipitated minerals and harmful ions • With the exception of Nortec electrode, all isothermal humidifiers manufacturers recommend mid-season inspections to fine tune drain rates • Nortec electrode humidifiers automatically adjusts drain rates to supply water conditions • For average water conditions, Nortec electrode is the most water efficient isothermal humidifier
