  2. God's Calling • Leviticus 26:1-20 • "'Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the LORD your God. 2 "'Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the LORD. 3 "'If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, 4 I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. 5 Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until

I will remove wild beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. 7 You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. 8 Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you. 9 "'I will look on you with favor

You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. 17 I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those

  7. God’s Calling Obedience

  8. God's Calling

  9. God's Calling • The first words in Leviticus are… • The LORD called to Moses… • The Hebrew word for “the Lord called” became the title of the book of Leviticus. Today we call the book Leviticus after the tribe of Levi, from whence came the priesthood.

  10. God's Calling • Set the Stage: • Before they knew other nations. • In the desert, after Mt. Sinai. • They have made a covenant with God. • They will be God’s people, and He will be their God.

  11. God's Calling • Today we are talking about obedience to God. This is not always an easy topic. • I could talk about obedience all day long… • Or at least about disobedience. • God made a covenant with the people and they promised to obey Him.

  12. God's Calling • Exodus 19:3-6 • 3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said…4 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’

  13. God's Calling • The people of Israel gave to God to show their obedience. • They gave their gold for furnishings. • They gave their livestock for sacrifices. • They built the Tabernacle and carried it. • The guarded and cleaned the Tabernacle. • They observed rituals & kept themselves clean. • They observed the festivals and holy days

  14. God's Calling • Leviticus 26: Blessings • 3 "'If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, 4 I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. 5 Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land. 6 "'I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove wild beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through

  16. God's Calling • Leviticus 26: Blessings • will not abhor you. 12 I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.

  17. God's Calling • Hey, that sounds nice! I follow a God like that! • Does anyone want to join the church? • But wait, we are not finished…

  18. God's Calling • The people of Israel gave to God to show their obedience. • The people shouted their allegiance to God on Mount Gerizim (blessings) and Mount Ebal (curses). • Judges 2- Repentance at Bokim • The people kept covenant through the life of Moses, and Joshua, and the generation after

  19. God's Calling • Leviticus 26: Curses • 14 "'But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, 15 and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, 16 then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and sap your strength. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. 17 I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those

  20. God's Calling • Leviticus 26: Curses • those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you. 18 "'If after all this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over. 19 I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze. 20 Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.

  21. God's Calling • Now, wait a minute. What happened to all the good things? Why does God have to be so negative? Why not just rain down blessings on our heads? We promise we’ll be good! • Let me tell you someone about the promises… • My children have promised to never disobey me, never leave toys out, never fight with each other, if I’ll give them what they want…

  22. God's Calling • So if you are a good person, God will bless you, right? • Psalms 37 3 Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. 4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. • Watch out for these Psalms- their tricky! • God will change your desires.

  23. God's Calling • If we obey God, He will take care of us. • How do we Obey? • Pray to God to find out what He wants… • But also, know the word of God. • God has communicated to us what He wants from us. Should we memorize the rules? • Understand Biblical principles.

  24. God's Calling • We cannot properly understand the New Testament without a basic understanding of the Old Testament. • Jesus Christ said He came to fulfill the law by introducing a new covenant with the people of God. Jesus made it clear how important it is to know and obey His commands.

  25. God's Calling • Jeremiah 31:31-34 • 33 "This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."

  26. God's Calling • The book of Hebrews reminds us the Jesus was obedient to His Father for our sake- to bring eternal life to the people of God.

  27. God's Calling • Hebrews 5:7-9 • 7 During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him…

  28. God's Calling • In Romans and Galatians, Paul explains to us the relationship of believers to the law.

  29. God's Calling • Romans 3:27-28 • 27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

  30. God's Calling • In this new covenant in Christ our righteousness is not found in obeying a list of rules, but in believing in the power of the forgiveness and grace of Jesus Christ. • When we trust in Christ, the Spirit gives us the desire and will power to obey. • We cannot change ourselves.

  31. God's Calling • Romans 6:15-17 • 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.

  32. God's Calling • In this new covenant the Spirit changes us. We now live under the law of the Spirit instead of under the law of sin and death.

  33. God's Calling • Romans 8:1-4 • Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

  34. God's Calling • What does this mean for you? • If you are struggling with guilt for sin and are falling into despair, accept the forgiveness of Christ. • If you are ambushed by your shame, let Christ’s grace wash over you. • And if you are stuck in sin and you cannot break out, let the Spirit give you the power to obey God.
