  2. What Is Certified Healthy Schools? • Created in 2010 to showcase Oklahoma public and private schools that are working to improve student and employee health by providing wellness opportunities and implementing policies that lead to healthier lifestyles. • Annual assessment tool to show schools where they stand on supporting health. • Three levels of certification are presented to qualifying applicants: • Basic • Merit • Excellence

  3. Why Is Becoming A Certified Healthy School Important? • Certified Healthy Schools show their communities they provide a healthy environment for students and employees. • Regular review of policies and procedures can help strengthen practice. • Many youth spend seven to eight hours a day in a public school setting, making schools an ideal location to promote child and adolescent health.

  4. School Criteria Categories • The school criteria was built to incorporate all 8 components of the Coordinated School Health approach. • The Coordinated School Health approach is used as a blueprint for integrating health-promoting practices in the school setting.

  5. Scoring • Each criterion selected is worth one point. The school must have the minimum criteria in EVERY section in order to be certified. • Scoring for the school applications are legislatively mandated.

  6. What’s In It For The School? • Recognition as a school that goes “above and beyond” to create a healthy, nurturing environment. • The opportunity to invest in Oklahoma students’ and teachers’ quality of life. • Enhance the school’s image in the community and add credibility to the school. • Certified Healthy School recipients have the opportunity to apply for an incentive grant through TSET.
