In 2005-2006, significant Medicare regulations impacting Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and respiratory therapy emerged. Key issues included payment structures for inhalation drugs under Pt B, the proposed quality standards for DME, and the reclassification of Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV). Additionally, the implementation plans for oxygen equipment ownership after 36 months and final regulations on DME accreditation shaped the landscape. Aspects of the Competitive Acquisition program were also introduced, along with advocacy for respiratory therapists' status in health emergency preparedness and smoking cessation efforts.
