  3. Missing God’s Purpose for your Life through Disobedience Presenter: Dr. Jennifer E. Reid Date: November 11, 2012

  4. PURPOSE • Purpose (Noun)-A deliberate intension (1 Peter 4:3 (New King James Version) 3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries) 2. Purpose (Verb)-Foreordained-This lays stress upon the personal interest which God had set forth for us

  5. Disobedience 1. The condition of being un-persuadable 2.The condition of failing or refusing to hear • Carelessness in attitude is the precursor or forerunner of actual disobedience (Jer. 11:10; 35:17; Acts 7:57) 3. Unwilling to be persuaded (Luke 1:17; Acts 26:19; Rom. 1:30; 2Tim. 3:2; Titus 1:16; 3:3) 4. Unruly (Titus 1:6, 10; Heb 2:8) 5. Refuse to be persuaded (Some of us just have to learn the hard way-We do not take telling-So we suffer needlessly)

  6. What is God’s Purpose for your life? • Jeremiah 29:11 (New King James Version) 11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 3 John 1:1-3 (New King James Version) 2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. 3 For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.

  7. Obedience: The act of conforming to the command of a superior out of regard for his/her authority Proper response to God’s acts, promises, and commands Conformity with what God prescribes, not only automatically, but driven out of love and gratitude. God’s laws and promises are build upon obedience Salvation without obedience is empty There is no life of victory without obedience

  8. Obedience • The Key to: • Salvation • Victorious living • God’s blessings • Peace of mind • Prosperity and • Joy in the Holy spirit

  9. The necessity of obedience to Salvation: Romans 5:19  • 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. • Our inheritance: A sin nature-A natural desire to be disobedient (we are born in sin and shaped in inequity (Romans 5:19 (King James Version) • 19For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous

  10. Importance of Obedience • 306-Obedience laws (moral and civil laws) • 61 commands- Family (honor of father and mother) • 32 commands- False religion • 84 commands- miscellaneous (love of neighbor, respect of persons, tattoos) • 61commands- murder • 96 commands-sex (including homosexuality ) • 75 commands-Neighbor • 436 commands-Health • 6 commands- Rebellion • 26 commands- Humane • 107 commands-Conquest • 42 commands -property • 14 commands – Business • 60 commands- Justice • 50 commands- Slave

  11. What does All this mean? • Exodus 19:5(NKJV) • 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. • Exodus 23:21-22 • 21 Beware of Him and obey His voice; do not provoke Him, for He will not pardon your transgressions; for My nameis in Him. 22 But if you indeed obey His voice and do all (Pastor talked about God wants it All, not part-time lovers) that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

  12. Deuteronomy 11:1 Love and Obedience Rewarded • 1 “Therefore you shall love the LORD your God, and keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments always. • Deuteronomy 11:26-28 • 26 “Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you today; 28 and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.

  13. Obedience Activates A Wide Open Door of Blessings and Possibilities

  14. Barely Opened Door Seems Harmless

  15. Open Door Appears Innocent

  16. Closed DoorMay be closed for Good Reasons

  17. A Door that appears Welcoming

  18. Isaiah 1:19-20 • 19 If you are willing and obedient,       You shall eat the good of the land; 20 But if you refuse and rebel,       You shall be devoured by the sword”;       For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. • Jeremiah 7:23 • 23 But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ • Jeremiah 26:13 • 13 Now therefore, amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; then the LORD will relent concerning the doom that He has pronounced against you.

  19. Acts 5:29 • 29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men. • James 1:25 • 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

  20. Obedience Preferred Before Sacrifice • 1 Samuel 15:22  • 22 So Samuel said:       “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,       As in obeying the voice of the LORD?       Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.

  21. RECALL • Romans 5:19 • 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. • 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. I • Hebrews 5:7-8 • 7who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son,yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.

  22. Battle Ground for Learning Obedience Obedience in the Home • Ephesians 6 Children and Parents • 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. • Colossians 3:20 • 20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord

  23. It is important that the older men and women in the church position themselves to be able to teach the young men and women • Those who should be examples, must be mindful that they have an audience constantly watching them. If they are not worthy of respect, it will cause the young to question the keeping power of God. • Likewise we must be a good witness for Christ on our jobs • Arrive to work on time • Be honest in business • Be accountable

  24. Civil Obedience: Escape from man’s Judgment • Romans 13:1-2 • Submit to Government • 1Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. • Hebrews 13:17 • 17Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

  36. Action Plan for your JourneyDo you have one?

  37. Your life is a “Journey”

  38. ‘Time’ is a ‘costly’ Resource!

  39. Passion, Practice, Performance Whatever your choice of career or position GM Mother Wife F r I e n d Pastor Minister Garbage collector NURSE Teacher

  40. Why is Obedience and Discipline so important to our success in Christ Jesus? • 2Tim 1:4-16 • 2Tim 3:16-17 • Matt 7:23-25 • Matt 23:3

  41. So you ask, how do I know if my life and walk is in obedience?” • Rule #1: Always assess yourself! • Self-examination is key to ensure the appropriate reflection • Only God knows the condition of the heart, so through Him you can assess your position and state and therefore request a change or thank Him for a life of obedience.

  42. What does it mean to Assess? • Review • Evaluate • Judge • Appraise • Measure • Calculate • Review your current state and condition by your results and evaluate it • Judge if you need to change or continue • Measure the results in light of your evaluation and those you trust • Calculate the risk, rewards or benefits to yourself and those who are directly or indirectly affected (what are people close to you saying-Listen)

  43. So How Do I live God’s Purpose for my life or know His Will? • Besides Praying and staying connected You must OBEY the Word of God and be obedient to those who have rule over you Matt. 6:25-34 “The greatest secret to living effectively on earth is understanding the principle and power of priorities (Monroe, 2006).

  44. “Our life is the sum total of all the decisions we make every day, and those decisions are determined by our priorities…How we use our time each day eventually defines our lives…The greatest tragedy in life is not death but life without a purpose…Life with the wrong priorities…Life greatest challenge is knowing what to do…The greatest mistake in life is to be busy but not effective…Life ‘s greatest failure is to be successful in the wrong thing…Success in life is measured by the effective use of one's time…Time is the true measure of life…How you spend your time determines the quality of your life and death (Monroe, 2006).

  45. “Correct priority protects your time…Correct priority protects your energy…Correct priority protects your talents and gifts..Correct priority protects your decisions…Correct priority protect your discipline…Correct priority simplifies your life…Failure to establish correct priority causes you to waste your two most important commodities: Your time and energy (Monroe, 2006)

  46. So in conclusion, How do I ensure God’s Purpose for my life through obedience? • First-Seek-This means to pursue, study, explore, understand, learn, and consider. • Second-Make the Kingdom first-The kingdom must be our first priority-The principal thing to place before all others as important. • Seekers-Must have a desire to know, and possess a passion for the object of their search. (Monroe, 2006).

  47. God established only two priorities for mankind: • The kingdom of God • The righteousness of God Kingdom-The governing influence of Heaven on earth and righteousness-the right alignment and positioning with that government authority. (Monroe, 2006).

  48. So we must passionately: • Obey and endeavor to be Disciplined • Reflect on our own actions and behaviors • Assess yourselves by examining your Positionality in life • Inspire others through your life of obedience and discipline • In order to Nail it!! We must be Obedient, Disciplined and engage in Deliberate practice.
