  2. What is PDD • PDD is affective dysfunction with a cyclic occurrence of psychosomatic symptoms in relation to a premenstrual phase of the menstrual cycle. • PDD affects women of reproductive age

  3. Signs & symptoms of PDD • Physical : breast tenderness, insomnia, hypersomnia, lethargy, weight gain, constipation, headaches, joint pain, change in appetite, • Mental : impaired concentration, decreased motivation, decreased self-control,

  4. Signs & symptoms of PDD • Emotional : anger, anxiety, irritable, mood swing, sadness

  5. Treatment program • Objectives : 1. To increase the awareness of PDD and the impact on daily life; 2. To decrease physical discomfort; 3. To allay the feeling of anxiety, depressed & frustration;

Treatment Program : Aromatherapy • Definition : - the art of treating body, mind and spirit with natural aromatic substances harvested from nature’s rich store; - the use of pure essential oils for healing and maintenance of vitality Essential oil : vital essence of plants converted into pure essential oils by mechanical process of steam distillation,

  7. Aromatherapy • Method of application: 1. Bath 2. Compression 3. Topical application 4. Massage 5. Inhalation 6. Vapourisation

  8. Aromatherapy • Essential oils good for PMS : 1. clary sage, 2. geranium, 3. rose, 4. cypress, 5. bergamot, 6. lavender, etc.

  9. Aromatherapy • Properties of the essential oils : - anti-depressant, - anti-spasmodic, - diuretic, - oestrogen-like, - sedative

  10. Interventions • 1. Aromatherapy body massage : once 7 to 10 days; • 2. Topical application : daily application over the abdomen; • 3. Bath : 1-2 times / week; • 4. Compression : if indicated; • 5. Vapourisation
