Pigment Colors • Mixing color of pigment (i.e.) paints is different than mixing colors of light. • Primary color of pigments • Magenta • Yellow • Cyan • These colors are mixed to form secondary colors.
Seeing Color • Your eyes see color using cones in your eye. • Your eyes use rods to see in low light situations. • Cones do not work well in low light.
Colors of light • Light also has three primary colors: • Red • Blue • Green • Mixing two of these colors give us secondary colors. • Mixing all three give us white light.
From Longest to Shortest λ • Red • Orange • Yellow • Green • Blue • Indigo • Violet We use the mnemonic Roy G. Biv to help us remember this.
Seeing Colors of Light • For opaque (objects you can’t see through) you see the color or colors the object reflects. • Ex: When white light shines on a strawberry all colors of light but red are absorbed. So you see red.
Seeing Colors of Light • If something appears white all colors of light are reflected. • If something appears black all colors of light are absorbed.
Seeing Colors • For transparent and translucent objects you see the color of light that is transmitted through the object. Ex. If something appears green then only green light is transmitted
Optical Illusions • An optical illusion is designed to “trick” the eye.
