  2. New Chairs in 2018 The elected Section Chair of Buffalo (Jason Andrews) relocated for a new job opportunity. Jason Bates has taken over the role as interim Buffalo Section Chair. Buffalo, Syracuse, and Ithaca will be holding elections for new Section Officers.

  5. Individual Section Audits • Completed: Rochester, Buffalo, Ithaca, and Syracuse • In Process: Binghamton

  6. Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) • Western New York Chapter includes all 5 Sections in the Western Area • Noted nationally for Chapter activities in the IEEE GRSS Magazine.

  7. The IEEE Binghamton Section in partnership with Dynamic Discs and the Greater Binghamton Disc Golf Club sponsored a Disc Golf Trilogy Challenge.  It was advertised across the Western Area. Pictures from Vince Socci – posted on Facebook.

  8. Laboratory of Laser Energetics is an integral facility in Omega laser technology and HED Science. Program is supported by the DOE/NNSA ($60-70M annually) (P, r, T) and structure of materials of interest to SSP and science(stars, planets, novel materials) Experiments, modeling, diagnostics, and innovation Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) laser >500 Ph.D. degrees based on LLE-sponsored and OMEGA based research C. Verdon PAD WCI (LLNL) D. Meyerhofer Physics Division Leader (LANL) OMEGA EP Control Room “The U.S. Department of Energy has proposed a gradual shutdown of the University of Rochester’s Laboratory of Laser Energetics, a facility at the center of the region’s research and commercial interests in energy and optics. The Rochester Section and the Western Area are working with IEEE-USA (Russ Harrison) to support maintaining the facility.

  9. Rochester Section:  • Joint Chapters Meeting on March 28th (six presentations, keynote, and dinner) • Signal Processing Society hosted a sold-out workshop on “Deep Learning”, sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society, NVIDIA, and Uber. • A joint meeting between the life members of the ASME and IEEE on the Chandra X-Ray Space Telescope, which was developed in Rochester will be held in April. • Awarded two $1500 Scholarships to undergraduates in the Rochester Section • Awarded a $750 travel Scholarship to a Graduate student to attend an IEEE meeting Buffalo Section:  • Joint meeting with the Hamilton CA Section Tour of the Niagara Falls Aerospace museum • Joint meeting with the Technical Societies Council of Western New York – Talk on Autonomous Vehicles • Section Meeting: Talk on Metamaterials for Microwave Applications • Section Meeting: Talk on Flight Data to Earth • Section Meeting: Tour of SR Instruments Co. – Production of electronic scales for healthcare

  10. Syracuse Section Recent Events: • March 25th - Central New York Science and Engineering Fair.    • April 12th – Syracuse Section IEEE Fellow’s night banquet with an invited presentation by Dr. Peter Saulson entitled “Listening to the universe with Gravitational Waves.” • April 14th – Syracuse University Engineering Open House with student project demonstrations from 12:30-2:30 pm.  • Other future events include Baseball night at the Syracuse Chiefs in June and a display booth at the NY State fair in August. • Ithaca Section Recent Events: • Alex Specker (Chair) worked with the Puerto Rican and Caribbean sections and others to supply portable lighting to hurricane-affected areas. The Ithaca section contributed $1000 for those efforts.
