Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) • A set of scientifically based nutrient reference values for a healthy population • Values are based on gender and age • An umbrella term for four types of reference values: 1) Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) • The amount of a nutrient that supports a specific function in the body of half the population
2) Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) • Average daily dietary intake level that is sufficient to meet the nutrient requirement of nearly all (97 to 98 percent) healthy individuals in a particular life-stage and gender group • Calculated based on the EAR, an RDA can only be set for a particular nutrient if there is sufficient scientific evidence to establish an EAR for that nutrient

3) Adequate Intake (AI) • If sufficient scientific evidence is not available to establish an EAR and set an RDA, an AI is derived for the nutrient instead
4) Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) • Highest level of continuing daily intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse health effects in almost all individuals in the life-stage group
Canada’s Food Guide for Healthy Eating • Recommendations are food servings not scientific values • Recommended servings based on age and age • Easier to access and follow than DRIs for most of the population
