  2. Is it someone’s personal page? Does the URL use words like: • Personal • J Smith (or a person’s name) • GeoCities, AOL, or other commercial servers. What about its domain name?

  3. Legitimate Web Sites use endings like: owl.english.purdue.edu/ Domain Names: www.sikids.com/

  4. Domain name = Type k12.ia.us = k-12 school in IA .gov = government.edu = college, university.org = non-profit organization.mil=military OR

  5. Use endings like:State / Country .ca=California .k12.ca.usOR .ca =Canada www.city.timmins.on.ca .au = Australia .de = Deutschland

  6. Less dependable sites(anyone can write these)use domain endings like:.htm or .html HyperText Markup Language.net = Internet service Provider.com =Commericalsite

  7. Are these dependable sites?www.fuelfacts.org/headlines008.htmwww.niddk.nih.gov/www.diabetes.org.uk/home.htmwww.city.timmins.on.ca/Municipal.pdf

  8. How could you tell which sites were dependable? • Look at the domain names. • Look at the site and then • Evaluate the content.

  10. When you look at the sites, remember to always evaluatefor accuracy, currency, and appropriateness.

  11. Who published the pages? Is the publisher a trusted source? The publisher is listed between the “www” and the domain name. .www.nytimes.com = the New York Times www.goarmy.com = U. S. Army http://www.alberteinstein.info = a university site
