My name is Brad Beers, and I'm a PLET Major at Penn State University, Behrend College. This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Rehrig Pacific. As an Eagle Scout who enjoys carpentry, historical reenacting, and music, I applied my management skills to improve operations. Key projects included reorganizing the Brand Plate Storage Room, troubleshooting issues with injection molding machines, and promoting a clean, efficient work environment using Lean manufacturing principles. Aspiring to pursue a career in orthotics, I am focused on continuous learning and effective communication in engineering.

Rehrig Pacific Summer Experience Brad Beers
About Me • From Franklin • Will answer to “Toast” • Eagle Scout • PLET Major • Penn State University, Erie the Beherend College • Would like to pursue future in orthotics • Hobbies Include • Reenacting between the years 500 and 1800 • Carpentry • Music
Learned • Proper setup of branders • Management skills • As Lead Operator • As Engineer • Troubleshooting • Lean manufacturing • “5 S” principals • Support is necessary
Projects • Reorganization of Brand Plate Storage Room • Preventative maintenance of injection molding machines • Repair of Frigel chiller system for Engel #3 • Extruder efficiency study • Work to improve the grinder / extruder area • Assist in installation of natural gas flam unit on Engel #3 • Painting and refurbishing of machine shop equipment • Organic cart drilling table • Cleaning stations • Enclosed fluff can • “5S” utilization across the shop floor • Labeling waterlines in East cell
Cleaning Stations • Put the Tools with the people • Locations set and ready • Difficulty acquiring inventory • Difficulty acquiring Purchase Order
Organic Cart Drilling Table • Makes job safer • Less Stressful work • Needs more time to refine prototype • Needs production testing
Work to improve the grinder / extruder area • Possibilities for improvement exist • Base research has been completed in some • Lift apparatus to aid operator • Recycling of fines to increase productivity • Utilization to occur as time allows • Makes job easier • Makes job safer • Makes job cleaner • Makes job more efficient
“5S” utilization across the shop floor • Continuing project • As needed basis • Constant improvement • Brings shop to world class status
Refurbinshing machine shop equipment • Creates Lean environment • Easy to tell if dirty • Easy to tell if broken • Creates world class environment
Reorganization of Brand Plate Storage Room • Creates 30 second inventory • Less time wasted finding parts • Has room for improvement • Full inventory of locations of all branding equipment in database
Enclosed Fluff Can • Started as a 95 gallon ROC • Creates cleaner work environment • Less air polutants • Less floor polutants • Creates safer work environment • Less fines that can be slipped on
Assist in installation of natural gas flame unit on Engel #3 • Natural gas is less expensive than propane • Less equipment involved
Preventative maintenance of injection molding machines • Keeps the machines running trouble free longer • Necessary evil • If problems are found • Can be resloved • Can prevent larger problems • Can decrease downtime
Repair of Frigel chiller system for Engel #3 • Part of preventative maintinence • Keeps cooling consistient • Keeps parts in spec • Completed to keep chiller functioning • No chiller = No parts
Extruder efficiency study • Found the maximum capabilities of the extruder in a safe manner • Extruder can be run faster • More wear and tear on parts • Shorter lifespan • At current setting • Good balance between longevity and throughput • Run at RPM
Current Project • Start-up Shutdown of East Cell Water • Help other PSU Student Projects • Other projects as needed
Goals • Learn as much as possible • Be a better engineer • Be a better employee • Continue here at Rehrig Pacific • If the possibility exists • Future work on communication • Major issue within the plant
