Rehrig Pacific Summer Experience

My name is Brad Beers, and I'm a PLET Major at Penn State University, Behrend College. This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Rehrig Pacific. As an Eagle Scout who enjoys carpentry, historical reenacting, and music, I applied my management skills to improve operations. Key projects included reorganizing the Brand Plate Storage Room, troubleshooting issues with injection molding machines, and promoting a clean, efficient work environment using Lean manufacturing principles. Aspiring to pursue a career in orthotics, I am focused on continuous learning and effective communication in engineering.

Projects • Reorganization of Brand Plate Storage Room • Preventative maintenance of injection molding machines • Repair of Frigel chiller system for Engel #3 • Extruder efficiency study • Work to improve the grinder / extruder area • Assist in installation of natural gas flam unit on Engel #3 • Painting and refurbishing of machine shop equipment • Organic cart drilling table • Cleaning stations • Enclosed fluff can • “5S” utilization across the shop floor • Labeling waterlines in East cell

  10. Reorganization of Brand Plate Storage Room • Creates 30 second inventory • Less time wasted finding parts • Has room for improvement • Full inventory of locations of all branding equipment in database

  11. Enclosed Fluff Can • Started as a 95 gallon ROC • Creates cleaner work environment • Less air polutants • Less floor polutants • Creates safer work environment • Less fines that can be slipped on

  12. Assist in installation of natural gas flame unit on Engel #3 • Natural gas is less expensive than propane • Less equipment involved

  13. Preventative maintenance of injection molding machines • Keeps the machines running trouble free longer • Necessary evil • If problems are found • Can be resloved • Can prevent larger problems • Can decrease downtime

  14. Repair of Frigel chiller system for Engel #3 • Part of preventative maintinence • Keeps cooling consistient • Keeps parts in spec • Completed to keep chiller functioning • No chiller = No parts

  15. Extruder efficiency study • Found the maximum capabilities of the extruder in a safe manner • Extruder can be run faster • More wear and tear on parts • Shorter lifespan • At current setting • Good balance between longevity and throughput • Run at RPM
