  1. Group 6  Colin Nathan Rocci

  2. Overview • Ways viruses can benefit our lives • Prevention of viral diseases • Unvaccinated children • Parents who choose not to vaccinate  • Comparison of active and passive transport

  3. Benefits of viruses in life • Protectsus frombacteriaand help immune system fight against viruses  • Antiviral medication helps speeds recovery from flu virus Colin mauz

  4. Cons of virus • Cold viruses attack with a fast-acting infection • The cell releases hundreds of new virus particles to infect lots of other cells • When a cell is infected the cell turns fromRNAtoDNA instead of DNA to RNA

  5. Preventions of viruses  • Can prevent by stimulating the body's immune system with vaccines • Vaccines prompts the body to produce immunity to the disease • Immunity is the body's ability to destroy pathogens or inactivated toxins Colin Mauz

  6. Treatment of viruses  • Wait for the immune system to fight off the virus • There are some antiviralmedications to take to get rid of some viruses • You can get blood tested to see if your immune system is fighting off the virus Colin

  7. Causes of viruses  • When virus enters your body, itinvadessome of your cells and takes over the cell machinery, redirecting it to produce the virus • The DNA is surrounded by a coat of lipids thatcannotreplicate Colin

  8. Requirements for vaccines in PA • The state of Pennsylvania requires that people get  Tetanus, diphtheria, chicken pox andhepatitis B • PA requires all students to be vaccinated  • If a student is unvaccinated, they can face exclusion  Nathan

  9. Negative effects of vaccines   • Vaccine side effects are different per person • Common symptoms can be fevers and achiness around the body  • Some more harsh symptoms can be seizures and life-threatening reactions  Nathan

  10. How vaccines affect the immune system • Vaccines insert a small amount of the disease into the person's body  • This trains the immune system • The vaccine introduces a small amount of the disease into the body so that it can find a way to prevent viruses  in the future  • If a  person has a weak immune system, they may get some  small  symptoms of the disease  Nathan

  11. DNA and RNA • DNA  and RNA are made up of monomers called nucleotides. • DNA is made  up of thymine, cytosine, adenine and guanine • RNA is made up of Uracil, Cytosine, Adenine, Guanine  • DNA has information to make protein  but can't leave nucleus  • RNA can leave the nucleus and makes the proteins  • Peoples DNA is different due to Mutiple variants of each gene.  Nathan

  12.                        PROS VS. CONS PROS CONS Can cause serious side effects  Some vaccines have bad ingredients  Vaccines are not natural • Can protect future generations  • Bad reactions from getting vaccines are extremely not common  • Can protect/save your child/children's life as they grow older RocciSchuima

  13. Parents Who Choose to Vaccinate  • Think that it can protect future generations  • Think that it can prevent trips to the doctor or hospital  • Think that it can protect their child's life growing up RocciSchuima

  14. Parents Who Choose Not To Vaccinate • Personal beliefs: that if their child or children has a heathy diet can decrease their risk of getting any diseases • Religious reasons family's religious beliefs lead them off from letting their children getting vaccines  • Safety Concerns such as hearing different opinions about getting vaccines  RocciSchuima

  15.                       Transport PASSIVE TRANSPORT ACTIVE TRANSPORT Moves molecules against the concentration gradient low-high Uses the energy though one ATP molecule  Examples: Going up a slide, Running up a Hill • Doesn’t require energy(ATP) • Moves molecules with the concentration gradient high-low • Examples: Isotonic, Hypertonic, Hypotonic,  Going down a slide Rocci Schuima

  16. ABC's • What causes a virus? a. an infected cell b. unhealthy food c. both a and b d. none of the above A Colin

  17. ABC'S • How can you find out if you have a virus? a. ask your doctor b. take your temperature c. blood test d. ask Brian Hess C Colin

  18. ABCs What  is DNA not made up of  • Thymine  • Uracil • Guanine  • Adenine  B)uracil Nathan

  19. ABCs True or false are vaccines required to go to school in PA  • True  • False  A)True Nathan

  20. ABCs WHICH REQUIRES ENERGY? A.  PASSIVE TRANSPORT B.  ACTIVE TRANSPORT C.  HYPERTONIC D. ALL OF THE ABOVE B Rocci Schuima

  21. ABCs HOW DO THE MOLECULES MOVE ON THE CONCENTRATION GRADIENT FOR ACTIVE TRANSPORT? A.  AGAINST  B.   WITH C. Doesn’t move D. NONE  of these A Rocci Schuima

  22. Overview • Ways viruses can benefit our lives • Prevention of viral diseases • Unvaccinated children • Parents who choose not to vaccinate  • Comparison of active and passive transport
