  2. Summary of Chapter 9 This story depicts the scene of a dilapidated village ,Thul, before a factory was built there. It shows the poverty in which they were living in and how hopeless they were to stop the government from building the factory. The story then narrows down to a poor and dysfunctional family, with the mother bedridden due to her illness and the father being a drunkard. The oldest sister, Lila, and the 11 year-old brother, Hari, had to work together to take care of the mother, father and their younger sisters. At that time, a rich and kind family, De Silvas, helped to pay the mother’s medical fees. Hari, being very stressed, decided to go to Bombay to search for job opportunities. He met Jagu who hired him in his restaurant, providing him with free food. He also got to know Mr. Panwallah who taught him how to fix a watch. After earning some money, he decided to return to Thul. When he returned, he found out that his father was no longer a drunkard and his mother had recovered from her illness. For more information, read the book yourself ! 
