Towards aLondon Institute of Cosmology? Based on brainstorming at a previous LCDM followed up with OferLahav
Motivation • ‘Golden Age’ of cosmology continuing: • Planck, new observational projects, synergy with LHC • Vibrant cosmology community in London • Observations, advanced computations, dark matter, inflation, quantum gravity, string theory. • All the principal London universities and colleges • Already search for synergies: • e.g., LCDMs. • Strengthening by new academic appointments, • e.g., Alan Heavens @ IC, Eugene Lim @ KCL, … • Several ERC grants • UCL, JE + NM @ KCL, …
Possible Joint Actions • Joint appointments: • Studentships, postdocs, faculty positions, …? • Joint lecture programmes for incoming PhD students? • Joint seminars? • Intensive short courses (teach-ins) focused on hot topics? • Joint visitor programme? • Share resources for high-performance computing? • Joint organization of conferences? • Joint teams in upcoming experiments and observational programmes.
Level of Ambition? • SuperLCDMs? • e.g., with external speakers, … • A real or virtual institute with a name such as London Institute of Cosmology (LIC)? • A bricks-and-mortar location? • How many London institutions? • IC + KCL + QMU + UCL + ??
