TB in Australia In Australia 90% of TB cases occur in people who were born overseas Often these patients have English as a second language There can also be issues with access to mainstream health services Clinicians need to be aware of when to consider TB for their patients and diagnose early

  3. Patients born overseas who have… Note: These symptoms are insidious and slow developing. The patient is often relatively well looking! A persistent cough >3 weeks Night sweats Fatigue Unexplained weight loss/ loss of appetite Fever THINK Pulmonary TB

  4. Has there been… Note: Do not use Quantiferon or TST to attempt to diagnose or exclude active TB. These are solely used for screening and contact tracing in those without symptoms. • Sputum specimens for acid fast bacilli (AFBs)? What is the result? • If extra-pulmonary TB suspected have specimens been sent for AFB smear and culture? • A chest x-ray- Very sensitive (CT scan not required) • History of TB? Previous treatment or contact of person with TB? Country of birth? Time spent overseas in high incidence countries?
