The Burmese python, native to Southeast Asia, has become a notorious invasive species in Florida, particularly the Everglades. Capable of growing over 23 feet long and weighing up to 200 pounds, these carnivorous snakes prey on small mammals, birds, and even larger animals like deer and alligators. Poor eyesight does not hinder their hunting, as they use chemical receptors and heat sensors to locate prey. Their growing population, exacerbated by pet owners releasing them into the wild, has disrupted local ecosystems. Efforts by park rangers to remove them are ongoing, but their high reproductive rates pose significant challenges.
