  1. Drought • What is the situation of the catastrophic(毁灭性的)drought? • What does the government do to help the arid region(旱区) and reduce the loss? • What shall we do to this situation?

The drought, the worst in 100 years in Yunnan and parts of Guizhou and some other southwest of China, would likely continue till May as no substantial rainfall was expected ahead of the rainy season, according to meteorological [mi:tiərə‘lɔdʒikəl] (气象的)agencies. The drought has ravaged southwestern China since last autumn, affecting 61.3 million residents and 5 million hectares(公顷) of crops in Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guangxi, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said last Wednesday. A reservoir is dried-up in Shilin Yi autonomous [ɔ:‘tɔnəməs](自治的;自主的)county, southwest China's Yunnan province, March 25, 2010. • The provincial(省的) government said the severe drought has affected the lives of 24.05 million people and 47.3 million mu (3.15 million hectares公顷 ) of crops.   7. Government Bailout['beil,aut](紧急救助) • Troops Help China is mobilizing its troops to help the struggling people in the country's drought affected southwest. A 1,000 troops were on their way to help with drought relief in Yunnan Province on Friday, and another 3,000 would be sent in the next few days, said Li Shiming, commander of the Chengdu military command.Each soldier carries a 25 liter plastic water container and are also equipped with well drilling equipment and sanitation devices

Cloud-Seeding(人工降雨) Cloud-seeding brings slight respite for drought-stricken province. • Cloud seeding above the drought-stricken province induced drizzles(细雨,毛毛雨), moderate rain(中雨) and downpours(暴雨) in 11 cities and prefectures [‘pri:fektʃə](县), including Kunming, Chuxiong and Xishuangbanna between 8 am on Saturday and 8 am on Sunday, Ma Lianxiang, chief weather forecaster of the provincial meteorological [,mi:tiərə’lɔdʒikəl] bureau(气象局), said on Sunday.

  9. Encourages Migrants to Work Outside • Because of the drought, KUNMING - Southwest China's Yunnan province intends to send more migrants to work outside the province as severe drought worsens. • Bai Enpei, chief of the Yunnan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, said the government will try to increase the number of migrant workers from Yunnan by 500,000 to 800,000 this year.

  10. Something that We Can Do • First, we should pay much attention to the situation of the server drought, and learn the news of it. • Second, we should try our best to help the struggling people, such as donating some money and encouraging them. • Third, when we use water we should remember that water is so precious, we must treasure it.
