  3. The Ninth Legion • They did exist • But historians question that 5,000 of Rome’s best soldiers were defeated by rebellious British tribes

So What Happened to the Ninth Legion? • Did they march north only to be annihilated by hostile tribes? • There is little evidence that this was the case, apart from: • The Ninth Legion’s name disappears from the Roman military rolls • The memorial to a soldier of the Ninth killed ‘in a great battle’ though this could have been the earlier battle with Boudicca • The Roman Eagle found in Silchester Hampshire sometime after the disappearance of the Ninth Legion

  5. The Roman Eagle • 1866 reverend J.G. Joyce found what he believed to be the lost battle standard of the Ninth Legion • But this was a case of misinterpretation • The eagle was the inspiration for Rosemary is what the movie is based on • However the eagle was a civilian symbol, most likely it stood upon a globe
