  8. EBTC – Main Beneficiaries ‘Think Small First’: EU’s SMEs are at the heart of EBTC’s efforts • Often the driving force behind technological innovations, innovation and R&D capacity lies within SMEs, relevant for the Indian market EBTC to facilitate market entry & clean technology transfer. EU’s R&D and S&T Communities • EU – India R&D and S&T collaboration has been strengthened in the last decade EBTC to further increase the EU-India ‘brain-circulation’ through promoting collaboration opportunities, enhancing outward mobility of EU researchers from EU Member States towards India, and promoting joint applied research. Please write to bengaluru@ebtc.euif you are an EU company interested in collaborating with Indian organizations.

  9. EBTC – Main Beneficiaries • Indian Business: • Indian companies seeking partnerships with EU biotech companies to develop collaborative projects and business with EU organizations • Indian R&D and S&T Communities: • Indian R&D and Science & Technology institutions seeking to develop R&D programs with European institutions Please email to bengaluru@ebtc.euif you are an Indian entiity interested in collaborating with European organizations.

  10. The two-pronged approach • Approach A: Identifying opportunities in India • Identify project / R&D opportunity in India. • EBTC will seek EU partners (via EBTC partners, EEN, etc) • Approach B: Identifying and soliciting EU interest • EU organizations looking for Indian partnerships/opportunities. • EBTC will seek Indian partners • EBTC’s IPR Helpdesk – an advisory to deal with IPR issues arising out of EU-India partnerships and joint programs • EBTC’s Cluster Helpdesk – facilitating EU-India cluster to cluster partnership and helping EU and Indian companies leverage the opportunities that arise. Thereby, enabling clusters in both regions to help in the internationalization of their companies.

  11. The two-pronged approach (cont.) Focus on Innovation and Cluster Development • Sharing best practices. • Enabling collaboration and developing a supportive eco-system. • Mentoring EU and Indian organizations to develop joint programs. • Guiding business and R&D consortiums to avail financing at a number of strategic levels. • Nurturing business and R&D projects to promote innovation via joint EU-India programs.

  12. EBTC’s role in Research • Facilitate linkages (EU to India) • Academia and Industry / Academia to Academia • Bridge Research Needs • Based on regional resources of India and research strength of EU (Clean Technology Mapping being undertaken) • Coordination • Research cooperation between different Institutions of EU and India; e.g. R&D activities identified in National Action Plan for Climate Change • Facilitate for forming smaller and medium sized projects and partner consortia that allow efficient coordination. e.g. public-private partnerships (PPPs), e.g. Joint Technology Initiatives (JTI), or projects involving joint programming • Demonstration projects • Develop pipeline and coordination of Demonstration projects available with central and state research institutions. • Supporting global demonstration programmes e.g. large scale, high risk programmes like Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Concentrated Solar Plants (CSP) due to multilateral platform • Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) • To promote guidelines on the use of IP in international research cooperation. • Laboratory to Market movement • Facilitate removal of barriers in basic and applied joint research between Indian and EU.

  13. EBTC’s role in Cluster Collaboration National Innovation Council of India launched the EBTC Cluster Helpdesk EU-India Cluster Collaboration Platform Short Term • Increase mutual awareness on cluster policies development methods and management practices • Facilitating in Europe and in India access to and contact with the appropriate stakeholders and understanding their respective research, innovation and industrial environments Long Term • Provide Market entry Services • Stakeholder Technology Transfer • Formation of Consortium for R&D • New Product development in the Indian conditions • Facilitate financial Closure

  14. Case Study 1 The municipality of Sundsvall (Sweden) & Satarem (India) Waste to Energy Project: • EBTC’s role: partner research and identification, matchmaking, and facilitating the relationship. • Satarem India had been seeking technology, process management and financing partnerships from Europe with a specific interest in collaborations with Swedish technology. • During the recent EBTC Environment mission in Bengaluru (Nov 2011), Mr. Venkatesh Sivaraman, Executive Director of Satarem India met with the CleanTech Region, Sundsvall, Sweden representative, Mr. Ramani Nagarajan. • Satarem India became interested in the integrated waste to energy project operated by the Sundsvall Energi and was keen to collaborate with them to bring the technology and process to India. • CleanTech region, IVL and EBTC organized the visit of Satarem India with Sundsvall Energi that included a detailed presentation of the project, performance and costs, including a site visit to the plant to witness the highly professionally managed facility that converts 200,000 tons/ year of municipal waste to heat and electricity with grate incinerator technology, including flue gas treatment. • Discussions will continue to explore the parameters for a win-win collaboration.

  15. Case Study 2 Enzen Global (Bengaluru) and Ciel et Terre (France) Floating solar PV systems • EBTC’s role: partner research and identification, matchmaking, and facilitating the relationship. • The issue of land availability is a global concern, and Ciel et Terre in their search for alternative solutions found that there were many unused water bodies. • The floating solar PV system developed as a result, is an innovative approach that does not require valuable land for setting up solar power projects, as well as the added advantage of the attached aeration system treating and cleaning the water bodies. • The patented technology by C&T is innovative, combining solar power generation with water treatment. Vast water resources such as water ponds, industrial reservoirs can be used, and the technology can also improve the quality of water.

  16. Case Study 3 Enzen Water Solutions (Bengaluru) and Tech Sub (France) • Rejuvenation and restoration of lakes and water bodies • EBTC role’s: partner research and identification, matchmaking, and facilitating the relationship. • Enzen Water Solutions and Tech Sub, will jointly evaluate the opportunity of rejuvenation and restoration of lakes and water bodies in India. • Share and promote technologies and solutions thereby implementing support programs for water quality improvement and conserving water bodies on an exclusive basis at select locations across the country. • Equipped with the best standards for resource management and following the eco-friendly methods of restoration, they will be able to counter the eutrophisation of aquatic environments using renewable energies through this venture.  • The restoration of water bodies requires a sound knowledge of the environment and the ecosystem. This project will bring together all of the required skills to rehabilitate water bodies, ensuring complete, effective and long lasting solutions.

  17.
