American HeritageActivities • Family Time Line- interview family members to learn about important events- use this information to create a time line. • Mapping Our Neighborhood- Have big bulletin board of city- using their home address students will find and locate their home on e the enlarged city map- then mark the different community services with different flags.

  6. ...American HeritageActivities • Where do you live- the students will talk about their community and what is in their community, take a field trip to Main Street and observe the many services in our community. • Read Cinderella and the Egyptian Cinderella, have student compare to see how cultures are different by writing it down. • Communities of the past- have books of times of all different times and places, have the children fill out the worksheet to see how this community was long ago.

People in SocietiesActivities • Comparing communities- student interview classroom visitors to learn about another community- then they can discover what they have in common- compare the different communities on chart paper. • communities, cultures, connections- theme unit where students will experience the communities, cultures, and connections within their family, local community and their world in order to discover the qualities of a community contributor.

  9. ...People in SocietiesActivities • How communities are different- we use dongs, poetry and literature, to illustrate the differences among communities. • Amish communities- talk about different communities and focus on Amish, take a field trip to Amishville in Indiana. • Community helpers- have parents come in and tell the kids what they do, the children will then draw and write a story about the parents that came in.

  14. Decision MakingActivities • Have student make a list of the resources in the classroom that they use everyday. • As a homework assignment have student ask at home and around school how people get their goods or resources. Discuss in class all the students findings.

  17. Democratic Process Activities • Students will select who will do what jobs within the classroom. • Students will create a list of ‘classroom rules’ and the consequences for violating these rules. • Students will go on a class trip to the local community courthouse.

  20. Decision Making and Resources Activities • Students will look at a list of possible activities to do and make a decision, as a class, on which one they will do first, second and so on. • Students will compare U.S. currency to other counties currency.

Students from each class will decide on various ways to spend and save their money. • Students will list life goals. Then the students will write about how their going to achieve these goals. • Students will get the chance to arrange the classroom. Their goal is to come together to decide how to get the maximum space out of the classroom.

  23. Science, Technology and Social Activities • Students will write a paper on recent technology and how their lives would be without technology. • Students will do an on-line activity where they research their community and give a PowerPoint presentation on what they discovered.
