  1. Pong Device HJR HJR Environmental Heather Nelson Jeannette Harduby Rudi Schuech

  2. Project Goals • To design a constant flow control device capable of handling turbid water • Easy to operate and maintain • Not prone to clogging • Inexpensive to build • Build and test preliminary model • Analyze data and make recommendations for further research

  3. Tubing-pipe adapter Pour water in here Initial water height Sealing pipe Head that ping pong ball must retain Pong pipe Sand pipe Perforated Baffle Driving head for sand column Removable adapters w/ internal mesh screens Height of sand Flexible tubing Tubing-pipe adapter Dramatization. Actual droplets may be smaller. Collection Chamber What happens when user stops adding water?

  4. Driving pressure for sand column HJR Upflow prevents trapped air Holding container (bucket or glass column) Sealing pipe Pong pipe Sand column (keyword: “prevent”)!

  5. Static pressure force = γH0 sealing pipe (not to scale!) Rs Ls L2 Vd2 Vc2 Rp Rp - L2 Rp θ2 θ1 Rp - L1 Rp Vc1 Vd1 L1 Volumes of top and bottom spherical sections are Vp2, Vp1 Force Balance H0 Ice cream = Ice cream cone – cone ! Total pressure head ≈ 25 cm → Sealing pipe diameter = 7 mm! Does it leak? Not really – leaks about 7 mL/day (.04% of 20 L/day target!)

  6. 1 2 Assuming # pores = # sand grains, and Porosity = θ = Vpores/Vtotal = Apores / Atotal…… z1-z2 = hL! Sand column L 10 cm hL→ 20 L/day expected 1.5 cm → sand diameter < 0.4 mm

  7. Clean Water

  8. Dirty Water (150 NTU)

  9. Testing Conclusions • Pong Device very sensitive to movement, needs to be designed more rigidly • Flow rate fluctuates over time • Possible cause: air bubbles forming in tubing – sand column needs to be shaken approximately every 6 hours • With dirty water flow rate decreases steadily over time

  10. Further Reflections • Bubbles won’t be a problem when water is at equilibrium with outside temperature

  11. Recommendations • Develop rigid Pong Device design • Test in field conditions • Contact NGO’s and other organizations working on similar research projects to fill gap in primary sources
