  1. Hydrosphere

  2. What will we look at in this unit? • The Hydrological Cycle • The River Course • The Characteristics at each stage • Hydrographs

  3. The Hydrological Cycle • Describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Since the water cycle is truly a "cycle," there is no beginning or end. Water can change states among liquid, vapour, and ice at various places in the water cycle

  4. There are many processes that occur within the hydrological cycle, these are; • Evaporation • Transpiration • Evapotranspiration • Condensation • Advection • Precipitation • Infiltration • Percolation • Throughflow • Runoff The force powering the cycle is SOLAR POWER, the hydrological cycle cannot occur without this.

  5. Advection Precipitation Condensation Runoff Infiltration Evaporation/ Transpiration Percolation throughflow

  6. Outline the difference between: • Evaporation and transpiration 2 • Condensation and precipitation 2 • Runoff and Percolation 2 • What is the name given to the water stored under • the surface? 1 • 3) What 3 processes contribute to this storage? 3 • 4) With the aid of a diagram, describe the global hydrological cycle. 6 • 5) Explain how a balance is maintained within the • hydrological cycle. 8
