  1. Oregon Significant Past State Activities Learning: Our annual fall state conference offers a wide variety of master classes taught by college professors, industry leaders, and outstanding art educators. Teachers earn state professional development units as well as college credits. Research/Knowledge: Our state conference includes regional meetings that provide attendees with opportunities to make face-to-face connections with others in their regions. Information is gathered from these regional meetings to improve existing programs as well as to develop new ones. Our recent Executive Board retreat developed goals for the upcoming new term that focus on outreach, support, funding relevance, and inclusion. Pacific Region Meeting

  2. One example: Each elementary principal has received an announcement about our upcoming fall conference, with our goal of increasing attendance of art-minded elementary teachers to our conference. Advocacy: We have begun the process of communicating with every principal in the state through our email server. Oregon Community:We havebegun the process of bringing the whole state into one centralized Scholastic Art Awards affiliate. All regions would be adjudicated at the state level, with awards ceremonies and exhibits being organized and run at the local regional level. Pacific Region Meeting

  3. New Idea #1: We are looking to create a spring conference or event to be held in the eastern half of the state. Smaller populated areas of the state have their own challenges for teachers who want to participate in state-wide events and programs. Oregon . New Idea #2: The Executive Board plans to create a new media position with the goal of giving the OAEA a stronger voice within the education profession and deeper connections within our art communities. Pacific Region Meeting

  4. Current Trends and Issues in Oregon: #1. There is continued concern for reduction of elementary and middle level art positions due to Common Core and STEM focus. Oregon #2. On a positive note, we have an Increase in professional development opportunities for OAEA art educators, due to the Master Class focus of Executive Board. #3. There is a huge push from the DOE for common assessments in the arts. This is a challenge with many districts only employing one art teacher and often little time or funding is provided for these assessments. Pacific Region Meeting

  5. One issue needing help: The OAEA is looking for creative, effective ways to encourage increased membership. Oregon The OAEA has several state-wide programs that we are excited about and will continue to develop during this new term. We hope to find innovative ways to roll out these benefits of being a member. The challenge that we need help with is to increase membership in times of budget cuts and reduced funding. We would like for other states to share their successes with us. Pacific Region Meeting
