  6. 2008-2010: two-year pilot conducted, using portable Echo360 units • Method: Ad-hoc capture • Coverage: 2 modules -> 5 modules , and one-off events • Lead/Support: Educational Technology Team + local LRAT (Martin Jones) • Training: Hands-on, Team demonstration sessions • Evaluation: Literature analysis, student survey, examination results • Key themes: • Impact on attendance • Impact on programmes • Student perceptions • Student reasons for use • Staff perceptions Lecture Capture in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences

Did the availability of these audio resources affect your attendance ? Staff responses “No problems as yet, but they did not know the lectures were to be recorded…” “...if this happens and becomes commonplace I predict low student numbers at lectures in future.” Student responses “podcasts of lectures are very good + useful … for all modules. Yes, we would still turn up to lectures!” >> Staff users have not been aware of any drop in student attendance <<

Student responses “I find that whilst listening to lectures and trying to make notes at the same time, I tend to miss a lot of important points...Listening to the podcast during revision will allow me to make sense of concepts which I did not understand during the original” To what extent do you feel these resources will assist you in your revision for the module ? Staff responses “As a self directed learning initiative cannot be faulted” “Allows for non linear review by students” “Revision aid for year Not to be re-used for future years”

Next steps: University pilot scheme with fixed units • Method: scheduled capture, with direct publishing to WebCT • Coverage: up to 10 modules, in addition to inaugurals, assemblies, etc • Lead/Support: LRAT and Learning Spaces (and EdTech Team in MDS) • Rooms: fixed installation into four large lecture theatres • Governance: participation in University pilot, Universitas 21 fellowship Lecture Capture in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences
