Outline • Research question • Scope of research • Some history • Examples from the 1990’s • Comparison table • Chart showing changes • Conclusions
Research question. • What features in personal computers have changed in the 1990’s ?
Scope • Restricted to PC’s between $2000 and $3000. • Comparing • Hard Drives • CPU Speed • RAM • Features (like CD-ROM)
History • 1981 IBM PC @ $8,000 • Mono VDU • 2 x 1.2MB 5.25” floppy • 64KB RAM (0.064MB!) • 1984 - IBM PC XT @ $14,000 • Mono VDU • Storage • 1.2MB 5.25” FDD • 10MB Hard DD • 256K RAM (1/4 MB)
1992 - 80286 PC • VDU 14” VGA • (640 x 480 x 16 colour) • CPU 16 Mhz 80286 • RAM 1MB • Hard Disk • 52MB $2200 • 102MB $2600
1995 - 80486 • sVDU 14” VGA • (640 x 480 x 256 colour) • CPU 4/100 Mhz 80486 • RAM 8MB • Hard Disk • 540MB $2400 • 1GB $2600
1998 - Pentium II MMX • sVDU 15” sVGA • (800 x 600 x 16M colour) • CPU Pentium II MMX 300 Mhz • RAM 64MB • Hard Disk • 6.5MB $2800
Conclusions • CPU Speeds, hard disk capacities and RAM, are all increasing exponentially. • With three different things increasing exponentially overall performance will change much more than double each year. • Since software is written to take advantage of new hardware it is likely that your PC purchased this year will need to be replaced within 3 years • (Maybe sooner!!)
