  4. RTW Program BenefitsEducation and Business Recognizes the needs of the business community for better prepared employees. Develops educator and business partnerships to prepare students for the 21st century workforce. Provides a tool to align student skill development and training to employer requested work skills. Identifies gaps between student employability skills and employer needs; thus, allowing for school-based curriculum revisions. Employers and educators can be more confident that students have the skills necessary for successful job performance.

Volusia RTW PlanTarget Market - Justification • Target CTE programs provide students with 21st century work skills through employment related instruction and on-the-job training supervised by an employer and teacher. • Juniors and Seniors entering the workforce directly after high school must provide evidence that they are prepared with the skills necessary to succeed in the workplace.

  12. Volusia RTW PlanAssessment Centers • 9 High Schools • 5 Alt. Ed. Sites • Career Connection Coach (Bus) The Coach is a mobile assessment lab complete with satellite internet connectivity and 14 computer Stations.

Volusia RTW PlanSkill Development and TestingCTE Programs • Instructors provide students with targeted instruction through the identified CTE program frameworks and skill development using the self-paced, online WIN program. • ACT WorkKeys Assessment occurs at the end of the 1st and 2nd semesters at each assessment site.

Volusia RTW PlanSkill Development and TestingJuniors/Seniors – Direct Entry • Skill development for juniors and seniors NOT enrolled in the target CTE programs occurs through the school-based Career Connection Facilitator (students identified through guidance). • The Career Connection Coach is utilized to test identified juniors and seniors during the months of December, April and May.

  17. Volusia RTW PlanProgram Results AS OF MAY 31, 2008: • Proctored 1,505 assessments • 70% of students who took all three assessments (RI, LI, AM) earned a RTW credential • 22% GOLD • 54% SILVER • 24% BRONZE

Volusia RTW PlanEvaluation - Keys to Success PROMOTION: • Presentations at district preplanning, principal, assistant principal, guidance director; Instructional Council; and business partner steering committee meetings • Presentations to chambers and local businesses and business organizations PARTNERSHIPS: • Workforce Board of Volusia/Flagler Counties • Daytona Beach College; Advanced Technology Center • Local business and industry trade associations (VMA; SHRM) • Local Chambers of Commerce STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING: • Trainings and refreshers as needed • One-on-one support • School-based implementation contact at each site COMMUNICATION: • Between CTE District Specialist, RTW Project Coordinator, school-based coordinator and teachers • RTW promotion web page on www.career-connection.org • RTW Promotion on district Back-to-School Guide, HS Showcase Booklet; Parent Mailers

Volusia RTW PlanEvaluation - Lessons Learned • Use your RTW Project Coordinator! • New technology can be SCARY thus, multiple staff developments and hands-on support are necessary. • Allow more time for student testing • Maintain communication through site visits, emails and monthly updates • Don’t get discouraged, implementation is a continual process! Build on successes one step at a time.

Volusia RTW PlanNext Steps • Batch enroll of all Volusia Juniors and Seniors in April 2008 CURRICULUM: • Incorporate RTW into other career academy and CTE programs • CTE Curriculum Mapping • Career Academy Curriculum Integration PROMOTION/OUTREACH: • Workforce Board One-Stop Connection • Internship Clearinghouse Project • Expand Coach services for Juniors and Seniors • Preplanning RTW Workshop – August 2008 • Brainstorm classroom implementation; evaluation & next steps: • What worked and what didn’t? • How can we increase student numbers? • Do we need curriculum modifications?
