Cook Islands Profile • Population: 19,569 (2006 census) • Capital: Rarotonga – pop 9,424 • Cyclone Season: November – March • Industry: Tourism, Fisheries, Agriculture, Deep Sea Mining, Financial Services • Tourism No: 110,000 per year • EEZ: 2 million km2 gained 400,000 km2 • Island Groups: Northern Group – 6i, 1u, Southern Group – 6i, 2u, Total – 15 Islands • GDP: $US15,813 • Constraints: De-population- migration, Island isolation- Irregular Inter Island shipping transport, Rarotonga Community Beautification Programme MINISTRY OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS

Cook Islands DRM Progress 2010 - 12 • Emergency Management Cook Islands (EMCI) and Climate Change • Climate Change for Disaster Reduction merger with EMCI under the Prime Minister Office. • A Joint National Action Plan for Disaster Response Management & Climate Change. • Ongoing Development of a Joint National Policy & Legislation for Disaster Management & Climate Change • Disaster Emergency Trust fund appropriation by Cabinet approved in May 2011 • Total of $NZ 264,000 for Enabling immediate response to disasters. Expected 5 years interest at ($NZ42,048) • Amendment to the DRM Act is required for Budgetary purposes and Parliament appropriate approval. • Generate new income streams and disaster response and recovery Rarotonga Community Beautification Programme MINISTRY OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS

Cook Islands DRM Progress 2010 - 12 • Early Warning Siren installation for all Islands Completed • Fixed Sirens for Rarotonga fully automated. • Outer Islands fixed sirens remains on manual, yet to be automated. • Tsunami Evacuation Road Signs fully installed for all Islands • Red Cross Emergency Management Shelter and Administration in full operation • Pukapuka Island Cyclone Management Centre (CMC) Completed • Manihiki Island CMC Upgrade completed • Ministry focal point and Community Disaster Coordinators on-going training on SOPs Rarotonga Community Beautification Programme MINISTRY OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS
