Drama • The Lost Colony is performed in Manteo, North Carolina, and it is one of the state’s oldest outdoor dramas. • It is in its 74th year of production. • The coastal region is also home to the “Hollywood of the East.” Wilmington, NC has hosted the set of several movies, including those of local writer Nicholas Sparks, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as television shows like Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill.

  4. Moore’s Creek Bridge Cultural History This bridge was the site of a Revolutionary Battle in 1776. This location is just outside Wilmington, NC. The Battle of Moore’s Creek was an outstanding Patriot victory. It led to the 2nd Continental Congress, in which North Carolina was the first colony to vote for total independence from Britain. This site is now open for visitors.

  5. Wildlife Refuges • The coastal region is home to 10 wildlife refuges. • Wildlife refuges is where birds and animals are protected (usually by the state). • Many of these refuges offer touring so people can observe and become educated about the local wildlife.

  6. Unique Celebrations • Festivals are events held annually (once a year) to celebrate things. • Some festivals celebrate people, agriculture, industry, arts, music, or history. • Unique to the coastal region of NC are flotillas. • A flotilla is parade on the water.

  7. Wrightsville Beach, NC This holiday flotilla parade has been held now for 27 years.

  8.   9. Celebrating people • Coastal region’s first people groups included the Native American tribes like the Lumbee, Coharie, and the Waccamaw-Siouan. Powwows and festivals are held yearly to celebrate the Native American history as well as the European history of the region. European settlers include: British, Scottish, and Irish.

  10. The early settlers farmed and fished to survive. Now the seafood industry alone brings in 100 million dollars to NC’s economy. • Festivals show culture through arts, music, foods, and activities that can be seen and experienced by visiting the festival.
