  2. The Sun • The sun is similar to most of the other stars in our galaxy • Large ball of gas made mostly of hydrogen and helium held together by gravity • Middle-aged yellow star

The layers of the sun • Core: center of the sun • Radiative zone: very dense region • Convection zone: where sun circulates energy • Photosphere: what we know as the surface of the sun • Chromosphere: see this region of sun’s atmosphere during a solar eclipse • Corona: outer atmosphere of the sun

  5. Surface Features of the Sun • Sunspots mark cooler areas on the sun’s surface; related to changes in the magnetic properties of the sun. • Solar Flares are giant storms on the surface of the sun. Particles from the solar flares interact with earth’s upper atmosphere called auroras.
