  1. Main Entry:   human conditionPart of Speech: nDefinition:   the positive and negative aspects of being human, especially regarding birth, adolescence, love, aging, death, etc.

  2. So here’s the problem:While the universally accepted ideals are to be cooperative, loving and selfless, humans are often competitive, aggressive and selfish.

  3. Thinking about the “human condition” involves an attempt to make sense of these contradictory inclinations.

  4. Humans are capable of immense love and sensitivity, but we have also been capable of greed, hatred, brutality, rape, murder and war. Tuesdays With Morrie, at its core, considers many aspects of what it means to be human: • How we should love • How we should think about death • How we should be responsible to our friends, family, and the larger community

  5. It is NOT IRONIC that these are the same ideas that exist in the poems you found. Poetry EXISTS to give to voice to all aspects, positive and negative, of what it means to be human. The subconscious sense of guilt and agony of being unable to explain this contradictory capacity has been the burden of human life: the human condition.

  6. The quest for happiness is one aspect of what it means to be human. Humans are driven toward the goal of happiness, but what really makes us happy? Are we sometimes unintentionally creating unhappiness?

  7. Question #1 Describe which of Morrie’s philosophies is shown in the montage at the beginning of the film.

  8. Question #2 Explain how the speaker in the Indian slum expresses ideas from Tuesdays with Morrie.

  9. Question #3 Explain the “genetic set-point.”

  10. Question #4 Question #4 What is the best way to release dopamine?

  11. Question #5 What is the filmmaker’s definition of “flow”?

  12. Question #6What is the “hedonic treadmill?’

  13. Question #7 Describe both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

  14. Question #8 Relate the unhappiness in Japan to Mitch’s experience.

  15. What are you going to do with this information?Put the pieces together (the novel, the poetry, and the film) and explain how they elucidate the experience of being human.

  16. This piece of writing isn’t a research paper; rather, it is a creative and reflective piece that alludes to other works. There is no formula This is NOT a research paper; rather, it is to be reflective, thoughtful, and creative. You may write in first person, using personal experiences. However, you MUST refer to all works (novel, poetry, and film). A MANDATORY rough draft is due FRIDAY. On Friday we will be working with our drafts in class, so it is imperative that yours be present. I will not accept final papers on Monday if you don’t bring a draft on Friday, and you will take a zero.

  17. A good paper : • fully explores the question,“How do Tuesdays with Morrie, poetry, and Happy elucidate the human condition? • uses first person to relay personal experiences • is written creatively and uses strong authorial “voice,” strong word choice, and artful syntax (in short, WOW the reader with words!). • is FREE of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors.
