  2. Daily Objective • Temperature describes how hot or cold the air is. • Temperature is measured with a thermometer. • The unit used to measure temperature is degrees Celsius ( C ) or Fahrenheit (F).

Vocabulary • Temperature - A description of how hot or cold something is • Thermometer - A weather instrument used to measure temperature • Weather instrument - A tool that helps meteorologists measure weather • Tool - A device that is used to do something • Freezing - An air temperature below 0°C (32°F) • Cold - An air temperature between 0°C and 10°C (32°F and 50°F) • Cool - An air temperature between 10°C and 20°C (50°F and 65°F) • Warm - An air temperature between 20°C and 30°C (65°F and 80°F) • Hot - An air temperature between 30°C and 50°C (80°F and 120°F)

  4. Introduction Today we are going to we are going to learn about measuring temperature. Temperature describes how hot or cold something is. We can measure the temperature of different things.

  5. Observations and DiscussionsMeasuring Water Temperature I two containers of water. One is cold and one is hot. What do you think will happen to the red line on the thermometer if we put it cold water? In the hot water? The red line goes down when the temperature is colder and goes up when the temperature is warmer.

  6. Make a Model Thermometer • Color the areas as follows: • Hot – red • Warm – orange • Cool – yellow • Cold – blue • Freezing – purple • Cut out the glass and bulb (red line). Fold the paper in half so the picture is showing. Make a small cut in the middle of this area, open up the picture, and cut out the entire glass and bulb. • Turn the thermometer picture over and spread glue along the long edges. Do not glue the short edges. • Place the glued side of the thermometer picture on the white piece on construction paper. The picture is slightly smaller that the construction paper, so edges will not match. • Insert the red strip of construction paper between the thermometer picture and white construction paper. You should be able to move the red strip.

  7. Measuring Air TemperatureIndoor vs Outdoor Now lets compare the indoor temperature to the outside temperature. • Guess. Do you think it will be the same or different? • Read the thermometer for the indoor temperature and set your model temperature. • Go outside for the outdoor temperature. • Compare the two temperatures. Was it the same or different?
