Minority Population Changes in Salt Lake County (2000-2010): A GIS Analysis

This project analyzes the demographic shifts within minority populations in Salt Lake County, Utah, from 2000 to 2010. The total population increased from 898,387 to 1,029,655, highlighting significant growth among Latino, Asian, and Black communities. Using data from the US Census, we examined the population changes through charts and GIS mapping, revealing implications for business distribution and social services. This analysis emphasizes the importance of understanding these demographic trends for future community planning and resource allocation.

  4. Minority Population Change in Salt Lake County from 2000 to 2010 Salt Lake County is one of the fasters growing County in the State of Utah.In 2000 the total population was 898,387. By 2010 the total population rose to 1,029,655. Residential populations across large areas of adjoining census tracts are dominated by one or another of the city’s foremost racial/ ethnic groups with somewhat little racial/ethnic diversity. This is mainly factual for Latinos, Asians, whites and somewhat less so for American Indian and Alaska native (AIAN) and Blacks. From 2000 to 2010 the Salt Lake County has seen a large increase of Latinos, Asians and Blacks residents in the city’s well-known neighborhoods.

  10. IMPACT • These apparent changes in population will have implications for among other things business locations and legislative gerrymandering for political gains. Furthermore, it will have significant impact on social services need to be redistributed

Methodology The project involved several components: • Downloading data from US Census website • Created excel spreadsheet of population change from 2000 to • 2010 • Joining those attribute tables(Shape Files) and mapping the • results For this analysis I created a chart to depict the growth of Asians, AIAN(American Indian & Alaska Native and Black population from 2000 to 2010 in Salt Lake County for comparative purposes.
