  2. The Puritans • The puritans were a grouping of English protestants during the 16th and 17th centuries. • They contributed to the United States sense of mission, its work ethic, and its moral sensibility. • They were mainly concerned with religious matters.

  3. Politics • Government was mixed with religion. • Religion highly influenced politics and voting. • In some cases, politics were discussed during church services. • Religion also highly influenced who was voted in to positions of power.

  4. Puritan Laws • Theatres and Inns were banned or closed. • Anyone caught swearing could be fined. • No sports were allowed to be played on Sundays. Sundays were a Holy Day and no work could be done that day, including things like walking out of the village.

  5. Punishments • Benefit of clergy if they can read from the bible without error, their sentence will be reduced • Stocks the convicted is locked in a stockade and is pelted with food. The convicted must then clean up • Public Shaming the convicted is pulled on a rope through town, while the community is invited to point fingers at him, tell him he’s naughty, and pelt him/her with small objects.
