  1. Painted Lady Butterflies From Caterpillars to Butterflies

  2. Information about Your Caterpillars • Lay 500 eggs • Most known butterflies • Taste with their feet • They have 10,000 eyes • Breath through their abdomen!!! • The food they are eating is malva porridge.

  3. Life Cycle

  4. Compare Super worm Butterfly 4 stages Egg, larva, pupa, adult. • 4 stages • Egg, larva, pupa, adult.

  5. The Egg Stage • The eggs are laid on a plant stem or under a leaf. • They are 1mm in size. • Green and oval. • They breath through a tiny hole. • When the larva emerges, it eats the egg shell!!

  6. Different Butterflies • Different butterflies will lay their eggs in different places! • Why do you think so? • For protection. • To stick so they don’t fall down! • Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on Milkweed. Peacock butterflies lay their eggs on nettles…

  7. The Larva Stage • When they first emerge they are tiny threadlike larvae. 0.5 – 1 cm in length. • They are voracious eaters! • As it molts it begins to look like the caterpillars. • They have 13 segments. • Near the head or 3 pairs of legs making it a total of 6 legs. • Towards the back of the body are 5 suction cups that help the caterpillar adhere to surfaces. • They molt 4 to 6 times.

  8. Larva Stage

  9. The Last MOLT • This is the most interesting molt the larva will go through. • After the final molt the caterpillar has already attached itself to a solid surface and will begin to spin webbing and hang itself upside down. • The caterpillar shortens and begins to shape itself into an oval. • The webbing will harden and form a chrysalis.

  10. Molting is a bit different…

  11. The Chrysalis Stage • This stage is also known as the pupa stage. • It will last between 7 to 10 days. • This is when metamorphosis takes place for the caterpillar to transform into a butterfly.

  12. Adult Stage • The chrysalis opens from the bottom and the butterfly comes out head first. • This is because the butterfly needs to have its wings hanging upside down to prepare them for flight. • A reddish coloured liquid flows from the body into the wings. This liquid is called meconium. • The butterfly will uncurl and get ready to spread its wings for flight.  • They live from 2-4 weeks.

  13. Adult Stage

  14. Parts of the Butterfly

  15. Adaptations to stay alive • A caterpillar has had to adapt to protect itself since it is a soft and juicy food source for many animals. • Poisonous • Spiky • Camouflage
