PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES • All Schools: American Museum of Natural History’s Educators' Evening to Explore the Biological and Social Meaning of Skin Color • Deadline: April 27, 2012 Event: May 3, 2012 Contact: John Tom at JTom3@schools.nyc.gov; Cristina Trowbridge at ctrowbridge@amnh.org; AMNH Central Reservations at (212) 769-5200 • All educators are invited to the American Museum of Natural History’s (AMNH) educator evening to discuss the biological and social meanings of skin color.  Anthropologist and paleobiologist Nina G. Jablonski, author of Skin: Its Natural History and Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Penn State, will discuss the unique aspects of human skin and its importance as a key element of human evolution.  • The evening will provide teachers with opportunities to engage in dialogue and understand research about primate and human adaptations to the environment.  Following the talk, teachers may attend a reception in the Spitzer Hall of Human Origins to engage with AMNH staff and network with other educators.  • The event will take place on Thursday, May 3.  View the agenda, and submit an online form or call AMNH Central Reservations (open Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm) at 212-769-5200 by April 27 to register.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES • Elementary and Middle Schools: New York Hall of Science Middle Grades Physics Playground SciGames Program for Grades 6-8 • Deadline: May 1, 2012Contact: Dr. David Kanter at dkanter@nysci.org • Principals are invited to reserve a spot for their 6-8 science faculty for NYSCI’s three-year SciGames program, designed to engage all students in science via technology-enhanced school playground games that link to digital apps to support inquiry back in the classroom. Target physics content is aligned with the NYC Scope and Sequence and the Common Core. Participants will receive professional development and technology kits for their school’s faculty and a school grant. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES • Middle and High Schools: Free Sci-Ed Innovators Expo and Symposium • Event: May 3, 2012 Contact: Radha Basu at rrbasu@anudip.org or Susan Remsberg sremsberg@gmail.com • Middle and high school principals, STEM teachers, and students are invited to attend the third annual Sci-Ed Innovators Expo and Symposium.  Sci-Ed Innovators is a continuing initiative for NYC schools to access a high-quality science education. • Josh Thomases, Deputy Chief Academic Officer for the NYC Department of Education, will inaugurate the Science Expo, which will showcase the work of Sci-Ed Fellows and science projects from fifty NYC-area schools and STEM organizations.  At 3:30pm, Sci-Ed Innovators Expo will begin and be led by Dr. Christopher Emdin, Associate Professor of Science Education at Teachers College, Columbia University and author of ‘Urban Science Education for the Hip-Hop Generation.  At 6pm, the Symposium will be keynoted by distinguished Yale scientist and revolutionary innovator, Prof Ainissa Ramirez, Ph.D., Yale University, the host of Science Saturdays and Material Marvels.  Download the invitation. • The event will take place on May 3 from 3:30-7pm at the Armory on the Hudson, 216 Fort Washington Avenue (at the corner of West 168th Street, off of Broadway).  Admission to the event is free, but registration is required. • The event is co-sponsored by NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education, Culture, and Human Development, the Jhumki Basu Foundation and is made possible in part by grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York and support from ExxonMobil Corporation.
