  1. June 23, 2013 Today’s Passage: Luke 1:26-38 (Please read if you have not done so)

  2. Protoevangelium– Latin term from “proto” (first) and “evangelium” (evangelize or preach the gospel). Thus, protoevangelium is the first gospel. “So the Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this…I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’” (Genesis 3:15) Fulfilled Prophecy JHK

  3. “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) אות(owth - sign) - “omen, distinguishing mark.” עלמה(almah - virgin) - “a woman who has never had sexual intercourse.” עמנואל(Immanuel) – “God with us.” Fulfilled Prophecy JHK

  4. “In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee…” (Luke 1:26) 1:26 - 38 JHK

  5. “In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee…” (Luke 1:26) • Μιχαήλ (Michael) – “one who is like God.” • • Associated with strength, power and authority. • “But even the archangel Michael…” (Jude 1:9a) • Γαβριήλ(Gabriel) – “man of God.” • • Charged with bringing God’s message to humans. • “while I was in prayer, Gabrielcame to me in swift flight…” (Daniel 9:21) 1:26 - 38 JHK

  6. “In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee…” (Luke 1:26) Ναζαρά(Nazareth) - “the guarded one.” • Associated with Gentiles. • Called a “city” (polis) in the original text even though the population was less that 500 then. • Now a thriving city of 200,000 (largely Muslim). 1:26 - 38 JHK

  7. “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathaniel asked. (John 1:46a)

  8. “…to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.” (Luke 1:27) • She was a virgin. “When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until after she gave birth to a son.” (Matthew 1:24-25a) 1:26 - 38 JHK

  9. “…to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.” (Luke 1:27) • She was a virgin. • She was betrothed. “When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord… and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.” (Luke 2:22-24) “But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons…” (Leviticus 12:8a) 1:26 - 38 JHK

  10. “…to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.” (Luke 1:27) • She was a virgin. • She was betrothed. • Her betrothed was named Joseph. “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David…Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus…” (Matthew 1:1-16) 1:26 - 38 JHK

  11. “…to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.” (Luke 1:27) • She was a virgin. • She was betrothed. • Her betrothed was named Joseph. • Her name was Mary. 1:26 - 38 JHK

  12. “The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’” (Luke 1:28) • She was a virgin. • She was betrothed. • Her betrothed was named Joseph. • Her name was Mary. • She was favored by God. 1:26 - 38 JHK

  13. In what sense was Mary was favored by God? χαριτόω(charitoo) – “highly favored.” • to look upon with favor. • to honor with blessings. χάρις(charis) – “grace” • good will, loving-kindness, favor. • of the merciful kindness by which God saves sinners. Mariology JHK

  14. On what basis does God bestow grace (charis) to people? The clear conditions set forth in His Word! Election to salvation “For it is by grace (charis) you have been saved, through faith…” (Ephesians 2:8a) On what basis does God show favor (charitoo) to people? For reasons that are only known to God himself. Election to service Mariology JHK

  15. What is the difference between and • Election to salvation • Election to service Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac. Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad - in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: not by works but by him who calls - she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” (Romans 9:10-12) Mariology JHK

  16. What is the difference between and • Election to salvation • Election to service • God chose Jacob to be the heir of Isaac and continue the lineage that would lead to Messiah. • God rejected Esau as the heir of promise even though he was the firstborn of Isaac. * * *Very Important Note – In neither case did God act in a way that caused or prohibited a person’s salvation. Mariology JHK

  17. What is the difference between and • Election to salvation • Election to service ■God is free to choose whom He wants for service. ■ God is bound by His Word in choosing who will be saved. (Conditions for salvation are clearly laid out.) God did notpromise all to be selected as a part of Messiah’s line. God has notdecreed anyone to be saved because of such service. God haspromised to save everyone who has faith. Mariology JHK

  18. ■ God chose Jacob over Esau and Mary to be Jesus’ mother. ■ The reason(s) are known only to God and serve only His purpose in election to service. ■ Neither of them was saved from their sins as a result of being elected (chosen) for service. ■ Everyone who is saved (receives grace) is so as a result of meeting God’s conditions of faith. ■ Everyone who is condemned (not elected to salvation) is so because of not meeting God’s conditions. Mariology JHK

  19. DoctrineMeaning and Date Mother of God Provided human attributes of God’s Son and this allows her to offer grace to the faithful. (431) Assumption Assumed body and soul into heaven. (1850) Immaculate Conception Preserved immaculate from Original Sin. (1854) Perpetual Virgin A virgin before, during and after giving birth. (300’s) Co-Redemptrix Participates indirectly in salvation process. (1918) Mediatrix A supportive and secondary intercessor. (1883) Queen of Heaven God’s mother reigns over the earth in glory. (1846) Mariology JHK

  20. While Mary was certainly a godly woman greatly blessed in that she was chosen to bear the Savior of the world, she was not in any way divine or sinless, nor is she to be worshipped, revered, venerated, or prayed to. She is not the mother of God in the sense that God was not pre-existent, she did not ascend into heaven, she was not sinless, did not remain a virgin, plays no role in the process of salvation, has no intercessory powers and is not any more or less special than any other believer saved by faith in Jesus (as she herself was!) “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

  21. What evidence is there of Mary being saved? “When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” (Mark 3:21) “Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother…When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, ‘Woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” (John 19:25-27) “They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.” (Acts 1:14) Mariology JHK

  22. What do we know from Scripture about Mary? • • She was a virgin. • • She was betrothed. • • Her betrothed was named Joseph. • • Her name was Mary. • • She was favored by God, being chosen for service. • • She was a sinner saved by faith in Jesus. 1:26 - 38 JHK

  23. “How will this be since I am a virgin?” (Luke 1:34) “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” (Luke 1:18) Mary wanted to know the details of how this could be since she had not been sexually active. Zechariah was asking for a sign so that he could be sure that what the angel said was true. 1:26 - 38 JHK

  24. The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:35) ►Mary’s ovum was fertilized such that Jesus became a complete human being without the chromosomes usually provided by male sperm. ►The joining of the eternal Logos (Word) with a newly formed being so that Jesus was fully human and fully Divine. 1:26 - 38 JHK

  25. “For nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37) NIV 1984 Does this mean that God wants to grant everyone the desires of their heart despite them being seemingly impossible? “For no word from God will ever fail.” (Luke 1:37) NIV 2011 Or does this mean that God will fulfill all the promises He has made in writing despite the seeming impossibility of doing so? 1:26 - 38 JHK

  26. “For no word from God will ever fail.” (Luke 1:37) “The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off - for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:39) “God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised.” (Acts 13:23b) “And this is what he promised us - eternal life.” (I John 2:25) “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise…Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:9) JHK

  27. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her. (Luke 1:38) “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42) How will we respond when God asks us to do something that He considers vital but which is inconvenient for us? 1:26 - 38 JHK

  28. What do we learn about Jesus in the Annunciation? ▪ Jesus is the fulfillment of Scripture. ▪ Jesus is fully human. ▪ Jesus is fully God. ▪ Jesus is sovereign. ▪ Jesus is a king. ▪ Jesus is eternal. ▪ Jesus is our Savior. “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” (Luke 1:32a) “They remembered that…God Most High was their Redeemer.” (Psalm 78:35) אלעליון(el elyown) – Name of God meaning “Highest” “The Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) (In addition to 300+ other prophecies) “You will conceive and give birth to a son… (Luke 1:31a) “He will be great…” (Luke 1:32a) μέγας(megas) – “great” Something to be highly esteemed for its excellence. “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35) “…he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” (Luke 1:33) “…you are to call him Jesus.” (Luke 1:31b) Ἰησοῦς(Jesus) - “Yahweh saves” 1:26 - 38 JHK
