  1. Northeast Middle School A Look at the Student Code of Conduct 2014-2015

  2. Student Expectations • Come to school on time and prepared to learn. • Be courteous and kind to all you meet throughout the day. • Do your absolute best in all your classes. • Abide by the rules set forth in the CMCSS Student Code of Conduct.

  3. Consequences • The following consequences may be used with discipline referrals: • Loss of Privileges • Detention - lunch, before, or after school • In School Suspension • Out of School Suspension • Remandment to the Alternative School • Expulsion

  4. Tardiness • Please be sure to arrive to school or class before the bell has rung. On the third and each subsequent tardy, you will be referred to the principal. • Arrive to school between 7:00 and 7:20. You are considered tardy to school when the 7:20 bell rings. • Students should not arrive to school prior to 7:00 A.M.

  5. Skipping • Once you are on school property, failing to report to your assigned classroom and/or leaving a classroom without permission from the person in charge is considered skipping. (This includes going to the restroom without permission. You should go to the restroom between classes.)

  6. Vulgar and Profane Language • Please refrain from using profanity in the hallways or directing profanity at another student or teacher. Using profanity is an automatic referral to administration and does not require a warning from a teacher. • Profanity directed toward any School System employee may require short term suspension or greater punishment.

  7. Inappropriate Pictures • Please do not have in your possession while at school any pictures that can be deemed inappropriate by your teachers or peers. • This includes the sending and receiving of pictures on your cell phones.

  8. Lewd or Lascivious Conduct • Is any inappropriate: - exposure - gestures - advances - comments toward students or school employees.

  9. Threats, Assault, and Fighting • Threatening physical violence or assaulting another student is an automatic referral to the administration and requires no warning from a teacher. • The SRO will be notified of any fights in the building and may issue a juvenile citation.

  10. Children Internet Safety Act • The Internet is to be used only for school work. You may not log on to your email, chat rooms, video games, music sites, or any other site not conducive to the educational process.

  11. Cell Phones • Must be OFF and PUTAWAY upon arrival to school and shall not be used until after school dismissal. • Cell phones/electronic devices can ONLY be used on buses for gaming purposes and/or to listen to music. On the bus, students must leave one ear unobstructed with an earphone/ear bud for communication with the driver. • Cell phones used in violation of the code of conduct are subject to search and/or review. Students have no expectation of privacy for cell phone use.

  12. Electronic Devices • Use or display of electronic devices is prohibited. • electronic games • portable radios • CD players • Ipods • Ipads • or any similar electronic device

  13. Disrespect • Using language that is loud or disorderly. • Screaming and Shouting • Arguing • Rolling the eyes • Saying “whatever” • Includes disrespectful body language

  14. Disruptive or Boisterous Conduct - Talking at inappropriate times - Running in the hallways - Picking up other students - Throwing items - Yelling, laughing loudly, etc.

  15. Cheating, Plagiarism, and Forgery • Copying homework from someone else • Looking on someone else’s test for answers • Copying and pasting from the Internet • Signing someone else’s signature as if you were that person

  16. Disobedience • When the teacher asks you do to something, please do so without arguing.

  17. Theft • Taking something that does not belong to you. • Finding something that does not belong to you and keeping it. • We will report thefts to the SRO who may then decide to issue a juvenile citation.

  18. Gambling • Having in your possession playing cards, dice, or other gaming devices and wagering money or personal property on the outcome.

  19. Extortion • Obtaining items that do not belong to you by threatening another individual. • The SRO will be notified.

  20. Tobacco • Having in your possession any type of tobacco product, including related items such as lighters, matches, and electronic cigarettes.

  21. Alcohol and Drugs • You may not have in your possession nor be under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, any controlled substance, or drug paraphernalia while on school property. • Selling, buying, or trying to sell or buy - alcohol and drugs, including prescription drugs, is a Zero Tolerance Violation.

  22. Arson • Starting a fire • Being an accomplice to starting a fire • Implying a fire will be started

  23. Assault and Threats Toward any School System Employee • Physically assaulting or threatening physical violence against any School System employee is a Zero Tolerance Violation and will result in expulsion from the school system for one calendar year.

  24. Vandalism and Defacing School Property • Purposefully or neglectfully damaging school property. • In all cases of vandalism, restitution will be required from the offender. • The SRO will also be notified if damage exceeds $25.00.

  25. Weapons • Do not have in your possession anything that can be used as a weapon including: • Any type of knife, razor blade, or box cutter • Any type of gun, gun cartridge, or bullet • Grenades • Bombs (including smoke bombs) • Explosive devices (including fire crackers) • Slingshot • Mace • Possession of any type of gun is a Zero Tolerance Violation and will result in expulsion from the school system for one calendar year.

  26. Other Conduct Warranting Discipline • Any conduct which is disruptive, dangerous, or harmful to the student or others will be addressed by your teachers and the administration of NEMS and may result in a discipline referral.

  27. Harassment, Intimidation, Hazing and Bullying Includes: • Physically harming a student or damaging another student’s property; • Knowingly placing a student in reasonable fear of physical harm; • Creating a hostile educational environment. • Harassment includes inappropriate remarks to others.

Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying • Name calling/mean teasing/mean comments • Physical bullying (ex: throwing paper at someone, a shoulder nudge) • Rumor spreading • Social isolation/exclusion • Taking or bothering another’s property (ex: knocking someone’s books out of his hands) • Threats/intimidation (ex: pounding fists together, stating there might be a fight)

  29. Northeast Middle School’sAnti-Bullying Rules 1. We will not bully others. 2. We will try to help students who are bullied. 3. We will try to include students who are left out. 4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

  30. Student Conduct on School Buses • ALL rules that apply in school apply on the school bus. • Vandalism of a school bus will require reimbursement of damages.

  31. Dress Code • No body chains or spikes. • No sunglasses are to be worn inside the building. • No midriff tops, see-through tops, undergarment type shirts, halter tops, low-cut blouses and pants, mini-skirts, tank tops, string tops, and cut-offs are to be worn to school. • No bandanas • Shorts must be longer than mid-thigh.No spandex or brief type shorts are permitted.

  32. Dress Code • Skirts and dresses must be longer than mid-thigh/approximately knee length. • House shoes or skate shoes cannot be worn. • Students may wear leggings as long as they are not see-through. • Holes in jeans/pants above the knees must not show skin. • No clothing with obscene or profane words. • No clothing advertising alcoholic beverages, drugs, drug paraphernalia, or tobacco products are to be worn to school.

  33. Dress Code • "Sagging" is not permitted. • No body piercing jewelry, with the exception of earrings • No Grills or Spacers • Large coats must be kept in lockers during the school day. • First Offense: sign the book in the office, receive a dress code letter to take home to inform your parents/guardians, and find appropriate clothing. • Second Offense: discipline referral

  34. GANGS • Any type of clothing, apparel, or accessory, which denotes such students’ membership in or affiliation with any gangs. • You should not recruit or solicit membership in any gang or gang related organization. • You should not hold yourself out as a member of a gang. • You should not urge, encourage, counsel, further, promote, assist, cause, advise, procure, or abet any other student or students to violate any section or paragraph of this policy. If you do you shall be deemed to have violated said policy.

  35. Search and Seizure • School officials have the right to search your lockers, backpacks, cell phones, and person based on reasonable suspicion.

  37. NEMS Cafeteria Rules • Breakfast: You must purchase a tray of food. • When you arrive in cafeteria, stay in your class line, single file. • Stay quiet while in the serving area. • If you drop something, pick it up. • Make sure you get all items when you go through the line: fork, milk, napkins, ketchup, etc. • Sit at your assigned table and in your assigned seat. • Only talk to the students near you at your table. • Raise your hand if you need assistance in the cafeteria. • Clean your area before throwing items away. • You will be dismissed by an adult in the cafeteria. • Do not throw food in the cafeteria. • Stay in a single file line and quiet when going back to class.
