  1. Archimedes

  2. Who is Archimedes? • Archimedes is a Greek Mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Few details of his life are known, but he was one of the leading scientist and mathematician in the classic antiquity. He is known for his inventions, including siege engines and the screw pump that bears his name

  3. The mathematician • Archimedes manage to approximate PI, and also proved that the radius of a circle is equal to PI times its diameter. He also proved that the area enclosed by a parabola and a straight line is 4/3 multiplied by the area of a triangle with equal base and height. He expressed the answer as an infinite geometric series with the common ratio 1/4

  4. Other Achievements • Archimedes is perhaps most widely known for his discovery of how to measure an irregular solid using water displacement. He didn’t invent the lever, but he did write the most early known rigorous explanation of the principle involved. He also designed the block-and-tackle, the Archimedes screw, and the claw of Archimedes.

  5. Archimedes death • Archimedes died in the siege of Syracuse. The most popular portrayal of his death was that he was drawing mathematical diagrams in the ground, and was killed by an angered soldier when he wouldn’t stop drawing. His alleged last words were “do not disturb my circles.” These circles were his mathematical drawings.

  6. Archimedes tomb • Archimedes tomb was inscribed with a sphere and a cylinder with the same height and diameter, showing his favorite mathematical proof. This states that the volume and surface area of a sphere is 2/3 that of a cylinder.

  7. Archimedes Legacy • There is a crater on the Moon that is named Archimedes, and a lunar mountain range, the Montes Archimedes, in his honor. • The asteroid 3600 Archimedes is named after him • The Fields medal for outstanding mathematics carries a portrait ofArchimedes • Eureka! Is California’s motto
