5. How tall is a horse? • The height of a horse is expressed in “hands” • A hand is equal to 4 inches. • The height of a horse is measured at the withers.

6. Appalossa • Originated in U.S. from horses brought from Spain. • They are white over hips and loins with dark spots. Sometimes they are white all over. • The Nez Perce Indian tribe developed the breed.

7. American Bashkir Curly • Originated in Russia, near the Ural mountains. • Has long silky curly hair. • Hair sheds in summer grows back in winter. • Can be many different colors.

8. American Mustang • Originated in U.S. from horses brought to New World by Spanish. • Originally came from North Africa. • Used for show and pleasure riding, jumping and as a stock horse. • May be any color.

9. Arabian • Originated in Arabia • Small, 850-1100 lbs. • Used for pleasure, showing and as a stock horse. • Colors are bay, gray and chestnut a few are black.

10. Andalusian • Originated in Spain. • There are very few in the U.S. because Spain did not allow exports. • Used for pleasure, jumping and bullfighting. • Colors are bay, white and gray and black

11. American Cream • Originated in the U.S. • Is a color breed-registered on basis of color. • Used for riding exhibition and as a stock horse.

12. Belgian • Originated in Belgium • A draft horse • Weight- 1,900 to 2,200 lbs. • Colors bay, chestnut and roan.

13. Buckskin • Originated in U.S. from Spanish stock. • Is a color breed. • Used for pleasure riding and as a stock horse. • Colors, buckskin, dun and red dun

14. Chincoteague Pony • Descends from the wild horses on Assateague Island off the coast of Va. And Maryland. • Were brought to Island from mainland by their owners to avoid taxes in the 17th century • They are pony size 12-13 hands high, due to poor diet and harsh environment. • Due to large amount of salt in diet they drink twice as much water as other domestic horses. • The large amount of water they drink gives them a bloated look.

15. Cleveland Bay • Originated in England • Larger horse-1,150-1400 lbs. • Used as a utility horse, pleasure riding and driving. • Color- Solid bay with black legs.

16. Connemara Pony • Originated in Ireland • Came to U.S. in 1951 • Used for jumping and pleasure riding. • Colors- Roan or chestnut, bay, black, brown, cream, dun or gray.

17. Clydesdale • Originated in Scotland • Used as a draft horse • Weights between 1,700 and 1,900 lbs. • Colors- bay and brown with white markings.

18. Galiceno • Originated in Spain • Small breed-12 to 13 hands high. • Used for pleasure riding. • Colors are bay,black, chestnut, dun and brown.

19. Hackney • Originated in England • Weighs 800 to 1,200 lbs. • Used as a harness or carriage horse. • Colors-bay, brown or chestnut, with white markings.

20. Missouri Fox TrottingHorse • Came from the Ozarks in Missouri. • Major use is pleasure riding • Has a fox trot gait • Color is sorrel, usually with white markings.

21. Percheron • Originated in France • Is a draft horse • Weight 1,900-2,000lbs. • Color –bay, brown, chestnut and roan.

22. Morab • Originated in California. • A cross between Morgan and Arabian. • Used for showing , endurance riding and pleasure riding. • Colors-may be any color, but without spots.

23. Morgan • Originated in the New England States, during the late 1700’s. • Used for pleasure riding, and as a stock horse. • Is the foundation breed for many breeds in the U.S. • Colors- bay, black brown and Chestnut.

24. Palomino • Originated in the U.S. from Spanish Stock. • Used for pleasure riding, stock, harness and as a parade horse. • Color-gold- color does not breed true in crosses. Mane and tail are lighter colors.

25. Pinto • Originated in the U.S. • Preferred color is ½ white and ½ colored . • Legs are usually white. • 4-types, stock, pleasure, hunter and saddle.

26. Pony of the Americas • Originated in U.S. • Color patterns of the Appaloosa. • Used for pleasure riding and showing. • From 11 to 13 hands high.

27. Quarter Horse • Originated in U.S. • First used as a race horse. “quarter miler” • Comes in most colors • Used for pleasure riding, racing, showing and as a stock horse.

28. Shetland Pony • Originated in Shetland Islands. • May be any horse color. • Two sizes- less than 10-3 hands and between 10-3 and 11-1 hands high. • Used for pleasure riding by children and for showing and racing.

29. Spanish Mustang • Originated in U.S. from horses brought to this country from Spain. • Color-may have any the horse colors. • A small horse 13 to 14-2 hands high. • Used for pleasure riding and as stock and pack horse.

30. Standardbred • Originated in the U.S. • Colors are bay, black, brown and chestnut. Other colors may accour. • Developed as a harness racing horse

31. Tennessee Walking Horse • Originated in the U.S. • Colors include sorrel, chestnut, black, bay, brown, white and golden. • Noted for it’s running walk gait. • Used for pleasure riding and showing.

32. Thoroughbred • Originated in England. • Development as a race horse began in the 17th. Century • Colors include bay, brown, and chestnut • Used as a race horse

33. Trakehner • Originated in East Prussia. • Name comes from the town in East Prussia were the breed was established. • Large horse 16-17 hands. • Used as a dressage horse- has elegant movement.
