  30. Federal Bureaucracy • Below the cabinet departments there are hundreds of agencies that help the president do his job effectively. The agencies and the employees of the Executive Branch are often called the Federal Bureaucracy. • Workers of these agencies are called bureaucrats or civil servants

  31. Executive Agencies and Departments • Executive agencies and departments help the Executive Branch carry out laws by: 1. Decide how to apply new laws to daily life by developing specific rules and procedures to put the laws into practice. 2. Administer day to day operations like deliver mail, collect taxes, patrol borders, etc. 3. Regulate various activities, such as airlines, banks, companies, etc.

  32. Independent Agencies • Independent Agencies are not part of the president’s cabinet. The president does appoint the head of these agencies. There are 3 types of independent agencies: Executive Agencies Government Corporations Regulatory Boards and Commissions

  33. Executive Agencies • Executive Agencies deal with certain specialized areas within the government. • Examples: NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration

  34. Government Corporations • Government Corporations that are like private businesses except that they are owned and operated by the government. • They charge fees for their services and products, but are not supposed to make a profit. • Example-US Postal Service

Regulatory Commissions • Regulatory Boards and Commissions do not have to report to the president. • The head of the board or commission is appointed by the president, but he cannot fire them. • Regulatory commissions protect the public by making and enforcing rules for certain industries. example-Federal Communications Commission-broadcasting
