  1. Sample Inquiry Units:Denton Inquiry 4 Lifelong Learning Project An Introduction by Judi Moreillon, DI4LL Educational Consultant, M.L.S., Ph.D. January 2014

  2. Today, January 21, 2014 in the Denton ISD librarians meeting, we will begin collaborating to develop and refine three sample inquiry units of instruction. These units integrate several DISD initiatives including: • Understanding by Design (UbD) • ELA-R and Social Studies/History TEKS • Inquiry Learning • Technology Integration

  3. In addition and perhaps most importantly of all, these unit plans spotlight the essential role of school librarians and classroom-library coteaching in the success of 21st-century education.

  4. Today, you and your instructional level colleagues will deconstruct sample inquiry lesson plans at the IDENTIFY phase of the process. The DI4LL Committee decided to begin at this phase in order to jumpstart the conversation. We all understand that the first three phases (Open, Immerse, and Explore) take a great deal of time… time that classroom teachers may not be especially willing to give to a fully-fleshed out inquiry unit of instruction.

  5. That said, it is not easy to begin at the IDENTIFY stage because students need background knowledge before they can identify their initial questions for an inquiry study. You may find the multiple lessons I have drafted at this phase too long (for classroom teachers’ or your own comfort). However, student-centered inquiry learning does take longer than teacher- or textbook-directed research. One or more of the lessons you will review today have the potential to become lessons for one of the first three phases of the inquiry process.

  6. In order to increase the relevance for DISD students, these lessons address TEKS standards that can be applied to learning about Denton: 3rd-grade Unit: What Are Our Connections and Questions about Denton Community Parks and Trails? 8th-grade Unit: How Can We Use Primary Source Documents and Artifacts to Learn about Denton County Just Before, During, and Immediately After the Civil War? 9th-grade Unit: What Are Our Questions about the Human Geography of Denton County?

  7. The resources for these lessons were created specifically for our sample units of study.   9. Over the next nine months, we will develop exemplary inquiry unit plans.
