This update by COO Bob Weber provides an overview of the Multi-Object Spectrometer for Infra-Red Exploration (MOSFIRE) project. The meeting highlights recent progress including successful cold alignment and installation of critical mechanisms and optics. It outlines current activities focusing on ongoing tests and preparations for various cool-down phases, with the goal of commissioning the instrument by the end of 2010. Additionally, plans for the InfraRed MultiSlit Spectrometer (IRMS) for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) are discussed, detailing necessary modifications and future contributions.

MOSFIRE Status Update Bob Weber 27 January 2010 COO All-Hands Meeting
MOSFIRE Overview • Multi-Object Spectrometer for Infra-Red Exploration • CIT, UCLA, UCSC, Keck collaboration • NIR multi-object spectroscopy over 6.1’ x 6.1’ FOV; up to 46 objects simultaneously • Wavelength coverage: 0.9-2.5 µm (Y, J , H & K) • Commissioning: Keck 1 Cass by end of 2010
Recent Progress Summary • 3rd cool down completed successfully • Cold alignment confirmed • Installed mechanisms (FCS, Grating Turret, Pupil Mechanism, CSU) operated successfully in all gravity orientations • All science optics successfully mounted & aligned • All lenses aligned & bonded into cells (except field flattener) • Camera barrel assembled • Collimator barrel ready to be assembled • Science flats aligned & bonded

Lens Mounting Camera Lens #4 Installed Camera Barrel Assembled
Current Activities • 4th cool down preparations • Re-check cold alignment w/ science flats • More mechanism tests • Detector head cold tests • Focus mechanism tests (cold @ UCLA) • Install detector • Field flattener installation
Current Activities (Cont.) • Filter wheel cold tests • Wheel detent design modifications necessary • Cold tests in test chamber before 5th cool down • Guider assembly & alignment check • Assemble to front end cap • CMM metrology & adjustment • Alignment check w.r.t. instrument axis during 4th cool down
Looking Forward • 5th cool down (late March) • Install all optics • Install all remaining mechanisms • Install science detector • Optical tests • 6th cool down (May) • Flexure mapping • 7th cool down (late June) • Acceptance tests? • Pack & Ship (July-August?) • Commissioning (September?)
IRMSInfraRed MultiSlit Spectrometer for TMT Bob Weber 27 January 2010 COO All-Hands Meeting
Overview • IRMS is envisioned as “clone” of MOSFIRE • Fed by NFIRAOS • Three modifications required for TMT: • Alter mounting to attach to NFIRAOS • Alter field lens prescription for TMT • Alter guider system to OIWFS (on instrument wave front sensing)
Current Status • TMT preparing SOW for Conceptual Design Study • Design study period: (late 2010 thru early 2011) • UC Riverside is the design study lead • COO’s contribution (~$100K): • Design & cost required modifications to MOSFIRE • Develop schedule & cost to completion
COO’s Future in IRMS? • The IRMS team remains undefined • This is substantially a fabrication, procurement, and I&T project. To keep IRMS costs minimal, we have suggested that: • COO participates in project engineering/management • Mechanical re-design done by COO • I&T tasks should be done at CIT (infrastructure & experience exist)
