  1. Digital Citizenship Week 1 Day 2 What is technology??

  2. What do you think of when you hear the word technology? • On your loose leaf/notes, write your definition & give example (2 minutes) • Share with a classmate (2 minutes) • Share whole class • Create a classwordle • Watch 1st video • Watch 2nd video

  3. Dictionary.com

  4. Technology: Old & New • Link to Comic Life handout

  5. On the back… • List 5 things you use that your parents did not and vice versa • Does the item your parents used make things easier or do you have access to better technology? • Why has technology changed over the years?

  6. define technology • technology - the total knowledge and skills available to any human society for industry, art, science, etc

  7. Technology’s impact on Society • What types of technology will make it? • Link to Ms.Jani’s wiki

  8. Invent a New Technology • groups of 2-3 or you may work by yourself • Today, each person is going to view the websites on Ms. Jani’s wiki-page and come up with at least 1 idea for a new technology by the end of class. • Remember, today, you are working by yourself!

  9. Let’s view some example projects

  10. Let’s Discuss your project!

  11. Let’s view some example projects

  12. Brainstorm… • What is the issue you are concerned about? • What is your new technology innovation? • What does it do and how does it work? • Who will benefit from this new technology? • How will they benefit? • What things will you need to make this a reality? • Who will you need to help you? • Do you think your idea can ever be realized? • Why or why not?

  13. Packet is on wiki!

  14. 6x6 PowerPoint Rule • The 6x6 rule states that on each slide there should be no more than 6 words per line and no more than 6 bullets per slide. • Anything over 6 words in one outline point would be considered writing out your presentation as opposed to just referencing a specific point. Going back to the research paper analogy, you wouldn't write your thesis and arguments in your outline points. • For the 6 bullet points per slide rule, any slide containing more than 6 bullet points would simply appear cluttered and be more of a distraction for the audience. • Another pro for the 6x6 rule is that, by limiting you to only 6 words per bullet point, it prevents you from typing out your entire presentation on the slideshow.

  15. 6x6 PowerPoint Rule ✔ • <=6 words per line • <=6 bullets per slide • >6 words = writing out your presentation • Just reference a specific point • Prevents cluttered slides that distract • Stops you from typing out everything

  16. Let’s view some more example projects

  17. GOAL: Come up with an innovative technological invention that combines at least 1 item from each person’s list. • You have several minutes to brainstorm and write down your ideas. • Share ideas with the whole class. • Discuss how these inventions are innovative and how they can help the world—improve something in modern day society. • by the end of the week the students are going to be coming up with a unique new technological invention that will improve a current societal issue.

  19. How do you research? • Go to the BBMS Homepage • Click on media center • Choose a database • Type in the search box – Be Specific! • Remember to cite this reference

  20. Example • “Asthma rates among children within a 24-block area in central Harlem are five times higher than the national average, according to the Asthma Initiative, a program administered by the Harlem Hospital Center, the Harlem Children's Zone, and Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health” (Misner, 2013).  Our invention  (what is it called?) will help to reduce the pollution. As a result,  the number of kids with asthma will be reduced. • Misner, Michael. "Breathless in Harlem: no one knows excatly what causes asthma, but many are convinced the primary culprit is air pollution, especially particles from burning diesel fuel. (World Reports)." Earth Island Journal Autumn 2003: 46+. Science In Context. Web. 19 Feb. 2013.
