  1. Quotes and Quotation Marks By Rachel Hanchrow

  2. Quotes vs. quotations • To quote means to repeat the exact words of another with the acknowledgement of the source. • A quotation is a phrase or a sentence from a book or a speech that reflects the author's profound thoughts.

  3. Quotation marks • there are two types of quotation marks: single quotes (` ') and double quotes (“ "). • a pair of quotation marks encloses a direct quotation, a repetition of someone's exact words. • A pair of single quotes are used when there is a quote inside another quote.

  4. Rules about quotation marks • Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks, even inside single quotes • If a question is in quotation marks, the question mark should be placed inside the quotation marks. • When you have a question outside quoted material AND inside quoted material, use only one question mark and place it inside the quotation mark. • Use single quotation marks for quotes within quotes. Note that the period goes inside all quote marks. • Use quotation marks to set off a direct quotation only

  5. Direct Quotes • Direct quotes always have to be in quotations!!!!! • EXAMPLES: • She said, “I like apples when I eat lunch.” • Did she say, “What did you do for Halloween?” • Rachel said, “Taylor said, ‘Katie and Landers play soccer.” • “I like penguins.” she said.
