  2. How do you pronounce Iroquois? • Pronunciation: eer-uh-kwoy. • The name Iroquois was given to them by their enemies, the Algonkian, as an insult. Ask students if they know what an enemy is. • The name Iroquois actually means "real snakes” in Algonkian. • Today the Iroquois call themselves the Haudenosaunee or Six Nations.

  3. Where did they live? • The Iroquois Indians lived in an area of the United States called the Woodland Region. • Originally, they lived in the area of the United States that is now known as New York State.

  4. Five Tribes in Iroquois Nation: • Mohawk • Seneca • Oneida • Onondaga • Cayuga • Later, the tribe Tuscarora joined the Confederacy.

  5. What kinds of houses did they have? • Iroquois Indians lived in longhouses. • Iroquois longhouses were up to a hundred feet long!! • In each longhouse there lived 2 or more families together (up to 60 people).

  6. What were men and women’s jobs in the Iroquois Nation? • What is a job? • Iroquois men were in charge of hunting, trading, and war. • Iroquois women were in charge of farming, property, and family.

  7. How did the Iroquois Indians travel? • They traveled by canoe on the water or by foot on land. • They did not use wheeled cars or ride animals.

  8. What was Iroquois music like? • The two most important Iroquois instruments are drums and flutes. • Drums were often filled with water to give them a different sound from all the other tribes.

  9. What was their food like? • Iroquois women did most of the farming, growing corn, beans, and squash and harvesting wild berries and herbs. • Iroquois men did most of the hunting, shooting deer and elk and fishing in the rivers
